Rear wheel bearing

Any advice on changing a rear wheel bearing guys? How long should it take and are there any torque setting that I should be aware of? Not even sure which side is causing the rumble, think it's offside, is there a sure way of checking? Any advice would be very welcome - providing it's helpful !!!!!

fairly straight foward only problem generally with the 6 torx screws which hold bearing in place - can be very tight and will break torx bits that aren't strengthened - 1 hour should do it easily

Stuart - Jack the car up and with the handbrake off, grab the rear wheel with both hands and give it a good wiggle. A dodgy wheel bearing should show up as detectable play in the movement of the wheel - rather than just going round and round like they normally do!

You should be able to work out which side needs replacement.

Worth checking as I've had similar sounding rumbles before and it was nothing more than worn tyres. Toyo Proxes seem to give a similar sound when they're on the limits.

I've already tried the wheel wobble test and there is absolutely nothing on either side. The car has new Pirelli P6000's and the noise was audiable prior to them being fitted and remains the same. I've even had a mechanic in the back seats but he can't place the noise either. Think I'm going to plum for the offside which is where I think it is and see if it solves it. S**t or bust!

This sometimes works.
Jack the wheel up, remove the wheel.
Spin the disc and put your finger on the back of the hub.
Sometimes you can feel the bearing grinding.
Sometimes you can't :!:

:evil: Stuart.... How did you get on with your Wheel Bearing?

I have found excess play in rear nearside and taken unit apart.....

However, all six Tork screws sheared and I am drilling out and retapping each one... the larger bearing outer tracks which are left int he carrier will have to be pushed out from the Stub axle carrier... I guess from the rear.... and one of the bearing tracks... small ends up on the hub Tube (splined) pressed up against the hub with no way to get a puller on it. I am going to try and grind this off and split it... The whole bearing and plate with tork screws comes as a kit from Renault... I've ordered one at c. £65.00 ... By the way the bearing No are TGB 18702 S03 and not easy to find locally.... +++ One of the bolts that hold the polished shaft the callipers slide on has sheared.. I can't get Ren to identify these yet anyone Know part No......................?

At least the TDC Sensor is in and the engines running again.... must stop tinkering and get back on road........

Peter, the full instructions for changing a rear bearing are in the workshop manual in the technical help section.

I followed these recently and had no problems. You were really unlucky for all 6 bolts to shear. :(

Do you mean the 2 bolts that retain the caliper to the hub? I might have these second hand somewhere.

Stephen....
Had a good day for a change... one bearing carrier has been ground off of the wheel hub shaft (splined tube) and cleaned up + having drilled out the six Tork screws the other brg carriers drove out fairly easily ...... All parts now cleaned and repainted with black hammerite ready for new bearing, when it arrives....

Yes I stripped one of the two bolts that the calliper runs on.... If you have a couple secondhand I'd be pleased to buy them? Also, I get a bounce back on your email address for some reason?
