So there is a God! Thanks for that Mike.

Do you happen to know what it contains?

And is it likely to be user-doable or will it require a visit to an Alpine dealer?

I've a ferry trip between me and my dealer, so I may postpone the recently announced recall work until the infotainment can be updated too, as it really is woeful.

Thanks!!

Perhaps @AlpineMcr could help with my previous question.

Meanwhile the infotainment system came up with a new and very annoying foible this morning.

Started my journey, realising as I’ve mentioned, and is sometimes the case, that the voice recognition system had again failed to initialise.

When I needed to make a phonecall, I used hey-Siri. The infotainment screen did register the call etc. However, it didn’t mute the radio. I had to mute it myself. Then I could hear and speak okay but when I needed to turn the volume up, the radio drowned out the call!

Seriously, given the purpose to avoid distractions whilst driving, this infotainment system is just not fit for purpose. On a car of this price it needs to be sorted and it needs to be sorted quickly.

From Alpine re infotainment system:

- They are looking at changing to a completely different infotainment system at some point
- There are no firmware updates in plan for the current system
- The current system (as fitted in PE and current Pure and Legende models) will never be updated to include CarPlay/Android

Not great news :-/

That is disappointing - I hope it is not an indication of customer service going forward.
So they know the entertainment system is borked and aren’t doing anything about it...

To be fair, they say that my complaints were the first they’d officially received - about parts of the system (eg voice rec) frequently not working and needing a restart (ie a wait for 10-15 mins after shutdown).

they also know myspin doesn't work and iphone connectivity can be poor.
I've told my dealer about the issues and was hoping for an update on the first service but it seems that is not going to happen.

So today I tried to use the radio which I don’t normally bother with on this car. No signals on fm or dab over a 20 mile journey- am I the only one with this problem?

I’ve never had a trip where the radio didn’t work at all. However, it’s quite noticeable and frequent in my experience when DAB swaps to a better source when on the move. Perhaps it is possible that (like I’ve seen with SD and voice-rec) the radio may be a sub-system and failed to boot on this occasion. Can you try the same journey again sometime?

Thanks CB
Looks as though you are correct.
Same journey today - sunny so I used the alpine and radio working from the start- not the best reception ever but at least it was working...

With regard to the occasional non-working voice recognition which requires a cycle of the system through the "snowy mountain scene" to cure, I've made some progress in my investigation.

The cause is that the system believes that the little button on the top right hand side of the control pod (ie. the 'OFF HOOK' button) is constantly in a 'Pressed' state.

Normal operation is that the OFF-HOOK button should be in a 'Released' state by default when the system has started. It should be in a 'Pressed' state when it has just been pressed and then revert to a 'Released' state immediately.

In the problem scenario the system starts with the button status incorrectly set. This could be because of a race condition or timing issue due to multiple subsystems starting at once and for one reason or another, the time taken varying for certain processes (possibly subsystem startup tests or initialisation of variables ), leading to incorrect reporting of status variable to a consuming process.

I would be interested to hear from anyone else who has this problem - it would be great to see what your s/w version is.

Thanks.

I don't think there is. I think Alpine have given up on it. Focal have never responded to my emails.

I'm waiting to get the new infotainment software update (problems at Alpine prevented the download when it was in for service) but to my knowledge all the update does is: speed up screen response and, possibly, improve DAB reception.

I hear this is the upgraded system in the S

Rather than Focal who provide the amp snd speakers, it may be better to talk to Bosch regarding the infotainment system and its future Carplay potential.

It’s certainly technically possible, and in fact already done in Suzuki’s implementation of the same Bosch system.

However, it would presumably take Alpine to request a ‘build’ of the system with Carplay alongside the Alpine telemetry interface etc and it may well be that they don’t want to pay for that unless they are forced to.

I was told that Alpine has no plans to do this, however, if enough owners complain about MySpin, CarPlay, Suzuki Jimny blah blah, you never know...
