Rough running GTA Turbo

Postby nationofzeros » Sat Feb 09, 2019 8:22 pm

Hi fellers

Any ideas on the root cause of the following, from the massive array of GTA experience :-

Lumpy idle, occasional mini backfires & pops, doesnt appear to be missing however, but not the silky smooth torquey idle I am used to
Some reluctance to rev easily
Blue smoke - not masses but clearly burning some oil - normally clean
@ 5000rpm static - not a flicker of life from the turbo boost gauge
No leaks or anything untoward

Car is on SORN so this is essentially a static test...

What do you think - the turbo ?

Thanks, Chris

Check distributor cap, arm, plugs and leads. If one plug is oily you may have mechanical issues.

Check map sensor and that vacuum hoses are all in place and not perished. Check all boost hoses for leaks. There is usually a light mist of oil in the main boost pipes, if there’s loads you may have a worn turbo.

Also take a look at this recent thread for other suggestions:

Turbo won't do anything static. It needs load to produce boost.

Rest, pull the dizzy, leads, plugs etc as said and check condition. Make sure leads are in correct order on dizzy.

Many thanks gentlemen, I checked spark ; 6 x good, checked inside of engine side air hoses - dry, no oil, started again, & once fully warm was running beautifully, as far as static & running up & down drive could reveal. 5000rpm - smooth as butter

Hopefully just a bit grumpy after little running over winter...fingers crossed !

Thanks again...

Just curious, when does it do it ?
Is it all the time ?
Mine is doing similar, it's fine when it starts cold, and when it's warmed up, but the bit in the middle it hesitates, hunts and pops a bit.
Prime candidate for mine is the temp sender to the ECU is failing, but I haven't even started investigating it until the weather warms up

Hi Bob

In my case, it was doing it from cold. Seemed OK when warmed up - more tests this weekend !

You think you’ve got problems, there was a guy on the megane forum today who’s climate control only worked when the car was cold, in reverse and he had his foot on the brake lol
Sounds like the joys of multiplex wiring.
