V6 turbo coolant temperature

I’ve finally finished the lhd conversion. I took her on a 200 mile trip and the coolant temperature would not go under100c. When climbing it goes up to 120C. Outside temperature is 15C. The cooland has been changed, the radiator fan works, but the temperature stays ip. What should be the normal road temperature of the coolant. On the Renault 25 v6 turbo, it rarely excedes 85C. Any ideas? Thanks

The thermostat on the turbo opens at 86 degrees ...... so the thermostat might need to be checked out.
Another question ........ was the cooling operating correctly when you first bought the car ?

I will change the thermostat. I only took a few drives in the city when i bought it and it was january, but the temperature stayed at 90. Will try to bleed the instalation again and change the thermostat. Thank you for the reply

Could also be a faulty coolant cap; not pressurizing the system hence temps goes up.

Had that more than once with an old Mk2 Escort.

I changed the expansion tank cap, flushed the instalation, bleed the instalation, change thermostat with 81c from 86c. Still the temperature stays high. The coolant level never drops, so I guess the headhaskets are out of question. Running out of ideas. The electric fan works. Maybe radiator not doing the job or water pump?

have you cleaned out the radiator.
Often the bottom half can become filled with silt, because the input and aoutput are both half way up the sides of the radiator.

Also, the coolant hoses are very hard when the engine warms up.

I haven’t taken the radiator off. I will do that and clean it.

These Alps can be tricky to bleed ......... can you tell us the method you are using to bleed the cooling system.

My english is not so good. Hope you understand. I let the engine warm up and bleed the screw next to the thermostat and the front radiator. I did this twice

As Simon suggests ..... it would be worth removing the rad and flushing it out.
Also, put the correct 86 degree thermostat in and jack up the rear of the car before refilling with coolant. You need to fill slowly as trapped air in the engine has to pass through the jiggle valve which is a small hole in the thermostat. Once you have filled the reservoir, bleed the radiator but with the bung completely removed to get a decent flow from the bleed tube....... then refill the reservoir to about half full before capping it and running the engine.
Do not worry about the bleed screw on the thermostat housing as it is redundant on Alpine installations. You need only bleed the radiator as the rest of the cooling system will self-bleed.
The main thing is to take your time in refilling.
You will have to top the reservoir up again once you have been for a run as there will have been very small pockets of air trapped in the engine which once the engine has been run, will find its way to the reservoir.
But ... PLEASE ... do not drain and refill or flush with a hot engine. Apart from scalding yourself with hot water, you could damage the engine by putting cold coolant into a hot engine.

Thanks for the advice. I will take of the radiator first and I will try to flush the engine block to. I changed the coolant twice and flushed the system and still it has a lot of rust in it.

Post a pic of the rad and also rub your hand over the fins. They should be solid and mostly intact aside from the usual few scars.

I had a rad ages ago that looked ok, but as soon as you rubbed your hand on it, the fins just disintegrated and crumbled away. Obviously useless for heat transfer as they were totally rotted out.

I will take a picture of it when I will remove it. Last night the temperature got high and it bursted a hose under the expansion tank and all the collant got under the car.

I’ve taken the radiator of and cleaned it. It’s full of rust and silt. I put some cleaning solution in it over the night and i will flush all the system. Hope it works
