electrical help

NOT a spammer.... but need some advice please. Have not been able to find a wiring diagram anywhere for my 1990 GTA turbo; any help? Having a starting issue that seems to be electrical ; everything works/turns, but it just won't 'hit' - no spark apparently. have changed out the coil and controller with a known-to-be-good one, but nothing. Any ideas? any help would be appreciated...

Try the fuel pump relay. It's inside the rear panel between the rear seats, where the ecu is. More than likely that its the one with the melted connector.

There should be a plug on the top of the RHS of the engine for the wiring to the injectors, clean that and un do and re-attach a few times.

Also could be the Crankshaft sensor...

For me...also check the TDC connection..grey plug (if still original) at top of engine loom. On my car I have had an intermittent issue...try cleaning the contacts on the connector. Search on TDC on this forum
Could be the sensor itself...there are post on here describing how to check or replace (making sure it is connected right way round)

I would agree with all of the above. I've had the exact same and done all those cures. My car has behaved perfectly since. (Tempting fate with that statement!) The engine bay connectors to say the TDC and various sensors get brittle with heat and age + corroded connections where the cables join. Inside the corrugated sleeves the cables are protected, but at the ends they deteriorate. You can get the same type of connectors from the likes of Demon Tweeks for a few £. Terminals crimp on. The only difference being that they are black with different keying positions to grey ones. Change as a pair to match, or cut the internal plastic to make a different key position if only one is changed.

Where is the car, maybe there is a local GTA owner who can help out.
Was was the last time that it did start?
If there is no spark, I suspect the TDC sensor.
Regarding the Fuel relays, upon tuning the ignition on the ECU and relays will energise the fuel pump for about 5-10 seconds while pressure is built up. You should easily hear the relays click between the rear seats and the pump prime inside the off side rear wheel arch.

When I turn the key on and let it do its system check thing, I can hear the fuel pump pressure up, so I think its ok. I took the cover off there between the back seats and looked at everything, even gave the ECM a whack with a screwdriver... All the relays look good, and I see no discolouration or melting of any wires. Its clean and dry in there. I have looked at what wiring I can easily see, and see no melting or such, but I cant see everything...
To answer the question about when it last ran ; I had been driving the car nearly every day last week. The car ran fine. I pulled it in the garage last Thursday evening, and when I went to get into it Friday afternoon - poof. Nothing. Engine turns over fine, but just wont hit.
I readily admit that I am not particularly well versed in, nor fond of, electrical system issues on cars; this is only the third "fun car" that Ive owned in my life that didnt have points and condensors- it may be the last...

Update... thanx for the suggestions guys. Ive plugged and unplugged and cleaned terminal connections on everything I can find under the hood...er..um...bonnet. Still no fire.
The 'TDC' keeps coming up ; to me that means top dead centre, but obviously from reading it is a switch/sensor well hidden under the turbo, correct? Apparently it is problematic... Any enlightenment/suggestions? Also, went looking for a crank positioning sensor; its not by the crank, at least as far as I can see. This car and these engines are entirely new to me - any more words of wisdom? Appreciate all the help so far...

The TDC sensor is the same as the cranck sensor.
However, the crank sensor measurers the position of the Crank from the position of the flywheel.
The TDC sensor does the same.
Is sounds like you have assumed this sensor is at the "top" of the flywheel. Actually it is at about 10 O Clock and on the Drivers/Right side of the bell housing.

the wiring is not normally sheethed in that heat resistant material. BTW, that's is my car .

It could be woth cleaning ...... but it is tough to get it out. Hope you have small hands, time and patience. Dont drop the bolts.

OK, thanx a lot. By the flywheel?!? I was looking for a crank trigger by...the crank. Will see if I can find it this evening and clean it...not holding my breath tho. Appreciate the links immensely.

At the risk of stating the obvious...have you checked you have fuel ? the GTA fuel gauges are not to be trusted ..I only say this as you mentioned you had been using it....and next day nothing.

Good shout Dave, yes GTA's also have a manual fuel gauge option.

Good point gentlemen and thank you; the car does have plenty of fuel. Apparently their fuel pickup isnt the best; the previous owner had told me that the gauge once showed almost 3 gallons [ ~12 litres] and the car simply would not start. He gave up and had the car flat-bedded in to the shop he was using and it started right up; being tilted on and off the truck sloshed the petrol in the right direction and the thing ran fine! My gauge says 50 litres or so, but maybe I oughta do a 'manual' check!

a friend of a friend who has much more electrical system knowledge than I and some neat testing equipment has determined that the TDC sensor is bad. [naturally...its hard to get to...]
My question dear forum members is - is that sensor generic to PRV engined cars or is it specific to Alpine? I looked at our site sponsors site linked on the left and they didnt show one. Thought that if it was the same for all PRV powered vehicles there might be a few wandering around my end of the world [DeLoreans and Volvos].
What say ya'll?
