1987 GTA V6 turbo - new here - couple of Qs?

Postby Simon_Wej » Mon Oct 17, 2016 2:15 pm

I'm new to the forum having just bought a GTA V6 Turbo. It's generally very good, but with a number of minor things to put right, cosmetics etc. I'm after some advice:-

1) It has the original radio cassette / equaliser unit which I'd like to keep. The radio works but not the cassette - it probably needs a good overhaul so can anyone recommend a repairer that I can send it to?
2) The interior light comes on but won't go off! I'm told it's the timer relay under the dash that's the likely culprit....there's quite a few relays in there so can anyone tell me which one it is?
3) Finally, the suspension bushes, rubbers etc all look original and a bit worn. I'd like to replace the whole lot - is there a kit that has all the necessary parts or is it a csae of ordering them individually?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Cheers, Simon

Congratulations Simon on your purchase.
Any pictures?

1/ Someone on here may be able to advise what to check on the cassette. So you actually have some cassettes to play?
2/ Maybe ...... if you remove one of the relays, you will see that the light does not work at all. I would suspect that this would be the one.
3/ No "kit" available yet, but individual bushes have been expensive in the past, like £30+ each.
Perhaps you can update your profile with your location.
Simon.

Thanks for the advice Simon, (I didn't think there would be another Simon Taylor around!)

I've now discovered the master clutch cycliner is leaking into the footwell and I got a new slave cylinder with the car so that's the biggest job I'm facing......master is quite straightforward as far as I can tell from looking at previous posts but the slave is turbo off time and booking ahead into the local osteopath for a few sessions.

A few pics of my car as requested....bit of a work in progress but fully driveable

Hi Simon, your car looks good. Welcome to the club.

To a certain extent all GTA`s are a labour of love. Very few things are as easy to do as they first seem.
The clutch master cylinder will be fairly straight forward, but as you say the slave will be a pig. I have a rebuild kit for mine & i keep putting off tackling it. Be brave :wtf

Slave is not that bad, especially if you dont have big hands.
You might be able to get away with just removing the link pipes from the NS manifold up to the Turbo.

Have you goit a replacement master, I think they are rare, but alternatives are available with priority to club members.

2 x Simon J Taylor's with Silver D reg GTA Turbos

You will need the front compartment as a permanent tool and spare parts store if you plan to use the car on a regular basis ;-)

I found somewhere in Germany that does a seal kit for the master - hope it's the right one otherwise I'll be looking for a new one :( ! I'm feeling adventurous so will get the turbo off and have a good look at what lies beneath (then get it towed to a garage when I mess it up!)

hardest part about turbo removal is getting the oil drain connected when you put it back on. Good luck and shout for help when needed.

Hi Simon .

I hope you poked it in all the right places before buying ;)
I can supply an alternative new master .Only a couple of slight differences. The position of the outlet is about 20 degrees further round the body but the pipe is flexible so will fit with no issue and you will need to swap over the shaped washer from the old unit .
Usual failure on clutch master is the spring failing and breaking into a few pieces so I'd not rely on just a seal kit fixing it long term .
About £45 delivered .

If anybody wants a shitload of cassettes to play in their original stereo equipment I can supply F.O.C. to anybody who wants 'em.
Otherwise they are going in the bin. Obviously postage will have to be paid or collect in person. P.M. me if interested.

No idea Simon, haven't looked at 'em for years. All mainly rock and pop from the late 70's and 80's. About 400 in quantity, Don't really want to get involved in splitting. As I say if anybody's interested in the lot they can have them gratis.

Regards
