anyone got fitting instructions for a Spider hood (Elia)

Postby johnpaul » Fri Jun 29, 2012 4:27 pm

Just had a Sonnenlund softtop arrive from Elia in Germany with lots of poppers, screws, brackets but no fitting instructions. Tried emailing Elia but no reply yet and wondered if anyone had some spare instructions to save me a bit of time so I can get it sorted in time for Le Mans Classic.....

Did it come with a staple gun and some 'extractor' claws?

Please can you update the thread with details and photos of the hood fitting and how it looks once fitted please.

I would be very interested.

Hello, sorry I don't seem to get notifications any more so missed this until now.

I think I took some photos while we installed the hood, it was very tricky. The Elia hood is fantastic quality and works well at motorway speeds. Has saved me many times but is overly taught, Aldridge Trimming did a superb job of adjusting mine to give a much better fit for surprisingly little money (given their reputation). They could make you one from scratch for less money if you were not fussed about the Elia label.

When I get back from the Circuit des Remparts classic in France next week I'll have a rummage and try to upload something. All the best

Ok I have some very dull pics of the install which are boring/badly taken so won't add here and some of the hood as fitted which are probably more relevant. As you can see it is very tight at the back. I was not happy and wanted the hood to perfectly lap the boot, Aldridge trimming made it perfect but I have no pics of it post Aldridge and the weather in Shropshire at the moment makes me loathe to get the car out :-(

I recently bought a yellow Spider and it came with one of these covers. I've not had to use it in the rain yet, but it seems to fit OK (although one of the poppers is broken). My problem is that the windows are all very fogged up and I haven't managed to find out the best way to get them clean and clear again. Does anyone have any ideas?

I can't tell you if there are better solutions, but I know these can be polished clear with the correct polish.
Can't remember which polish as it was 20 years back....
Check online (probably frosts uk)

Thanks, Andy. Will do some research. Did you see my Facebook message by the way? You may have to search for it as we're not officially FB "Friends".

The few times I've been caught in the rain, the biggest problem was water spurting up from the A post on the inside between the ash and the door.
Maybe I need new door seals!!

That must be the ugliest convertible top ever. Surely someone could have come up with a better design than that. Or even that hard top option the guy in America has just bought.

I'd rather get p1$$ wet through than have that up, or just put a brolly up :up
