Guide on Fitting New Headlight covers

Postby ChrisPackit » Tue Aug 09, 2016 1:31 pm

Well, a couple of weeks ago, Lee @ RATS kindly sent through the headlight covers that had been on order and I reckoned it's time I had a go at fitting them. I believe the official method is to remove the front nose cone, but I've also heard you can fit them from behind by removing the headlights, which sounds much less hassle to me.

Would anyone have either a guide they can point me towards or a few lines to point me in the right direction of how to do it, and also are they Tigersealed in or what sealant is used to bond?

Thanks

Chris

I think the workshop manual shows a "ballon" behind the cover to hold them in place while the glue cures.
I have seen others do it with external suckers pulling the glass forward while the glue, or Tigerseal, or what ever cures.
Good luck, but nose cone off does seem excessive as you say.

Clee uses the spiderman web and suckers method, I replaced one yonks ago and took the headlights out, then folded a 13 inch inner tube up and blew it up from inside while the Tigerseal went off, but I've an inking you struggle getting the N/S headlights out cos of the tank.......????
I'm sure Lee will guide you, but mask it all up nice and neat otherwise you end up in a right old mess with the sealant.

You can load them in from the front .Mask and then use suckers to pull into place whilst it goes off.Vital to get all the old sealant off .I've done it this way half a dozen times,no need to remove lights this way .

Sorry to hijack, but Clee, have you still got any of the polycarb covers ?
My passenger side one has an annoying chip in it.

Planning a possible respray next year so looking at "while I'm in there" options......
For the right price I'd take a single glass one over a pair of poly..........

I replaced a left side headlamp cover. I would reiterate the need to remove all the old sealant to get a flat surface to bond onto, and mask around the aperture and glass because it's messy. I used Tec7 flex/bond sealant. It worked well.
The glass will go in from outside. It might take several dry runs to work out the sequence of movement to get it in.
I chose to take out the headlights and fuel tank as I wanted to check the structure behind and under the tank. I thought it would be slightly less messy and easier to remove the old sealant too.
I bought children's water wings and inflated them to hold the glass in place.
Clean the actual headlamp glasses, as 30 odd years of dust showed the newly cleaned left side lamps were significantly brighter than the right ones. I had to take those out to clean them too!
