Driver's window - small plastic runner

Postby pgoldsmith » Mon Jul 18, 2016 11:31 am

The small plastic ‘runner’ that attaches to the window has come loose.
When I try to tighten it up, the small hex screw simply rotates but doesn’t tighten.
I’m guessing the screw has perhaps broken off.
Anyone know what size this is ?

A picture may explain this better. I am guessing that if you epoxi glue it back, it may help... but a picture would help..

BobfromNorway recently replaced these...he mentioned this

"Window is also fixed. If anyone else is having trouble with those little screws, M3 x 8 cs are just the dab, got them on the Bay of E for a couple of quid"

I'd forgotten..I did have a screw snap..or the hole had been worn...I had to drill and retap..I think it too me 2 attempts..(and you can't see the holes normally).
....you can just about do it in situ...just don't drill too far into the glass...bit tricky to get the angle right with the drill..
My budget tapping set worked ok as it's only aluminium..

Thanks for the advice Dave.
Mine may have snapped off, though I did poke a small Allen key in there to check.
Perhaps I need to re tap it , I'll go down this route.

Bob from Norway did indeed have trouble with this.
On and off since I bought the car.

The threads on the screw were a bit worn, and I am not sure the threads on the window upright were much better.
M3 x 8 C/S is the screw size, M3 x 10 would do.

I replaced the screws and just nipped them a smidge beyond finger tight and stuck a little bit of epoxy on to hold it in place.

So far so good, but I haven't used the car much.

If your threads are real bad, next best bet is probably to try to re-tap it to M3.5 or M4.
Remember there are 2 on each window, I had always noticed the top one coming loose, but hadn't noticed the lower one doing it until it came off and jammed the window down.

Thanks Bob.
I think first of all I'll replace the screw and see if that helps. If not then I'll retap.
Cheers,
Paul

The screw was worn, replaced it and it seems to tighten up OK.
I used a dab of screw lock to help keep it in place.
