@Custard...if you need a mobile AC specialist...(for clean/ pressure test / regas) but fingers crossed you sound OK... I found Ian http://www.subzeroac.co.uk very good and good value..he has now worked on GTA and A610s..he is Folkestone based but covers the south east.

Car is far better than some crapers you have sold, remember the GTA atmo with the major headgasket blow up 4 miles away from your house, which ended up with a full major rebuild?
The panic break down turns out he run out of fuel ( even though the customer was warned about the gauge ) and now the fuel turns into water, this car is Jesus!! and hes got working A/C, what else does a man want from a 610! :D

All fuel filters were replaced in 2009, front and rear, car has done around 2k miles with them. :up

The receiver drier is hard to find with the window...I got mine changed by an "old boy" as they call them around here, who recommissioned my A610 AC (or ST24) who had one in stock in his garage from a jag (Old XJ6 maybe) and that did have a window, it's also a Renault 25 part I believe. On the GTA they usually go very rusty or even perforate...terrible location. Most new ones I have seen don't have the window, but honestly it's not very useful...you get flow even when the system is nearly out of gas and can't cool a cup of tea let alone the car.
The other problem you have is the original condenser radiator is too small capacity for the legal gases,(they are less efficient than the r12 it was developed with) ...leads to high head pressures and that can pop the compressor seals or worse.
The second time I had mine done (after 4 years use) I couldn't find anyone with ST24 and had to go for Isceon 49...even higher pressures but still worked ok..ish.
On my GTA, the plan is to use a modern, high-efficiency condenser (like John Viola's), this will allow full capacity from the system without the excess head pressure.
I have found a suitable condenser for a GTA, no idea what an A610 one would look like (it could be the same part as the cabin is the same size) . Not genuine, but if it works better and you can't see it...why not. Modern designs are less like the water rad and are smaller and lighter. I'll let you know how I get on, the one I'm using has an integral receiver dryer in a bolt in capsule. This won't be visible on a GTA, but on a 610 might look very strange.
Custard, thanks for the pictures, having seen the compressor in bits, I'm now thinking of a home rebuild on the seized one I have in the garage...
Have fun.

Haha! Interesting discussions and banter.

Phildini - I am delighted with the car. Delighted. So not complaining in any way... If it all worked 100% I'd be bored! I am enjoying figuring out all these things.

And I used Subzero for the AC. Filled with RS24 if I remember right. Just needed the compressor connections filing slightly to make them flat. Everything else is as before. There was a slight leak detected at the compressor behind the pulley but we hoped it would seal if used.

So far, It's been nearly two months and still working. Time will tell. If not, I will get a new compressor.

Fitting my compressor tomorrow how much did it cost to re gas in Rs 24 as thay say it is an expensive gas, compared to R134a.

Yep - it is expensive. £120 for the fill! I just decided to go with it as it was cheaper than a new compressor and we thought it might just work.

Even if you have r134A seals in the compressor and the oil is 134a compatible, you still don't have PTFE lined pipes so it's going to leak out faster than the drop in gases. According to the site below ST24 gives more capacity and lower leak rates from old pipes, as well as not needing any other components changed. I got 4 years out of a fill on the 610 (which is about the same as my newer cars)
My experience was that the RS24 performance dropped off more than the pressure, leaving pressure but poor thermal capacity, but still quite a pressurised system, a regas restored things impressively, and in these cars, its very welcome (if you live in the South).
When I lived in Scotland, my new car was nearly out of warranty before I found the AC didn't work...there were missing parts.
According to this site, the actual cost shouldn't be 100% more than 134a (more like £10 more) but it could be out of date, I paid around 120 a fill vs 35-50 for my 134a cars.
This probably doesn't allow for the HUGE gas capacity of our cars...900grams vs 380 in my Audi, which will increase the gap.
SO...I'd recommend the RS24, probably cheaper if you are keeping the car or if it doesn't have a new receiver drier.

http://www.kwecars.com/technical/air-co ... sion-myth/

A bit more stolen from the MX5 forum...for all you chemists out there...

"R134 does have smaller and lighter molecules than the older R12.

R134a is 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane, and has a molecular mass of 102g/mol.
R12 is dichlorodifluoromethane, which has a molecular mass of 120g/mol.

R12 is therefore very close to being a fifth heavier, and whilst R134a has an additional carbon atom compared to R12, R-12 has two massive great chlorine atoms attached to the central carbon which are both around twice as large as fluorine atoms and nearly three times larger than carbon atoms.
So yes, a 15 or 20 year old refrigeration system with tired seals will let R134a leave the system much more readily than it would let R12 escape, in the same way that if you take two identically made balloons, one filled with helium and one filled with nitrogen to equal pressure, you will see the helium balloon deflates much more rapidly (helium molecules being much smaller than nitrogen ones)."
