Wheel bearing

My GTA has a rumbling noise from the rear. I think its a wheel bearing. Is the bearing the same as the front one from a Renault 25 ? If so are all the R25 versions the same ? The prices for GTA ones vary whereas the R25 ones seem cheap by comparison.

Two different part numbers for the bearings front and rear but they look identical ,ball race looks the same.I thought rears might be taper bearings but no........As long as you get good quality ones ,no malteaser balls, then yes R25 fronts will do .Not saying they will last as long but then none of us are doing mega miles or abusing too much ;)

apparently according to hearsay.... the rear bearing is stronger than the front on a gta..... but as you say they look the same, you can buy all main brands and they look the same, sometimes QH, FAI, First Line etc just rebox snr or skf so its a lotto, just don't buy cheap unbranded items with risk of chinky supply as they will last about as long as it takes you to fit them on the car, I've tried all makes on race spider and it gets caned and never had a problem with the good brands.

Yes,most of the old quality brands are actually SNR but watch out for some not being packed with grease .Pop the outer race off and lube them up good :up

Paul - best option to check the wheel bearing is to lift the rear slightly and see if there's any lateral play in the wheel (handbrake off first). You shouldn't feel any movement - if you do then it's either the bearing or the main centre nut. (Most tyre places can re-tighten the nut if it's slightly loose and you ask nicely).

Other option to consider for rumbling is tread depth. I can't remember if it's the Yokos or the Toyos I had on mine that would really become loud when they got down to their limit. Yonks ago, but I was thinking it was a wheel bearing, changed the tyres and the noise went away. Rears are large, heavy and have fairly solid bushing on the suspension and subframe so the noise does tend to travel into the cabin.

Thanks for the replies.
I will get the car jacked up tomorrow & check the bearing out. Having read the comments it may well be the tyres. They are Michelin 255s. Looking at the date code, using this for reference http://www.barrystiretech.com/dotcoding.html they were made in 1994 :o Looking at the past MOT`s the car has only done 14000 miles since. They must be past their sell by date

Yes, I had a worn (in fact very worn) set of Toyo's on the rear of mine and I was convinced my wheel bearing(s) were on the way out. Changed the tyres and the noise reduced greatly.
