Cable Required - Part No 181071 ???

Postby NickWW » Thu Apr 16, 2015 2:18 pm

Hi all,

I'm looking for the part No 181071 from the SIMON Alpine parts guide (see attached pic) for my 1989/90 GTA ATMO.
It's the cable that connects the gearbox to the speedo!

I can't get either of my two speedo's to work properly and I believe that it's due to this cable malfunctioning!
But I may be wrong?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks
Nick

Hi Nick

You say TWO Speedo's ........... can you expand on this please.
Assuming, at the moment, you have two speedo's connected to the speed sensor .... and you say you can't get them to work properly ..... are they both stopping and starting at the same time, or something else ?

BTW, your pic is for the 610, but as it happens the same part number 181071 is the same as for the later GTA.

Hi yes sorry... I have two complete binnacles as I thought it was better to change the lot but it didn't solve the problem of my speedo going nuts and displaying 100mph + when I was doing 30 or even 10mph. It just rattles up and down the mph scale at random???

I have narrowed it down to this part but I could be completely wrong as I'm no mechanic!

Any help would be great!

Thanks!

Cheers

Sorry for all the questions Nick, but are you saying that both your speedo units are doing EXACTLY the same as quoted above ?
This fault is usually caused by the speedo motors drive transistor going into, what is called, thermal runaway due to an internal leak. If when it happens, the speedo stays up at 100 mph or full scale even when you slow down and stop ..... it will not be the sensor.
Just check ...... each time you want to start the engine, before switching on the ign, look very closely at the speedo needle and see if it moves a fraction as you switch on
Also, look at the trip and over, say, 30 secs, does the trip roll the tenth of a mile drum, increasing the mileage slightly even though the car is stationary.

I had this once years ago after changing the battery. The main earth lead had been disturbed and lost good contact to the chassis.
I'm just here for the gasoline.

No problem Nick ..... as Darren said, "Worth a shot".
But on all fairness, it is difficult to suggest solutions for this problem you have with one or both instrument units. We can only try to help based on information given. A couple of questions I have asked, I still await answers to in order to appraise what we are dealing with.
However, in the absents of clarification, as you are a Full RAOC Member, you have access to the RAOC Members Forum. Might I suggest you go to page two of that forum and scroll down to a post named "GTA speedo faults" 29th Sep, 2010, and you will see quite a comprehensive post relating to these GTA speedo's. It is worth having a read. ;)

Hi John

In all honesty, i thought I had answered your questions sorry!

Just check ...... each time you want to start the engine, before switching on the ign, look very closely at the speedo needle and see if it moves a fraction as you switch on... Tried it bu itt doesn't move at all.

Also, look at the trip and over, say, 30 secs, does the trip roll the tenth of a mile drum, increasing the mileage slightly even though the car is stationary... Doesn't move either sorry.

One of the binnacles has only 50k on it and is supposed to be fully functional. I bought it from a valued and trusted group member!

Cheers

Hi Nick,

The above are the two questions I was looking for an answer to ......... I have added the word "does" to the second question which I seemed to have missed out previously (senior moment I think :shhh ).
Sorry to ask what appears to be trivial questions, but I can only go on my interpretation of what's posted by members. I will do all I can to help but, sitting here, I can only go on detailed info of your problem ..... hence the questions. :)

Hi John

The answer to the first question is Yes but NO to the second. It returns to zero... (think I had an old moment too :) )
