Thank you for the honest appraisal.

Let me offer you a little more in terms of current situation. 5 years ago I saw a collection of Alpine's at Le Mans - absolutely fell in love with the proportions of the car, the arches, wheels, scarcity - I totally got it. Always told myself that one day that I should look at these seriously if the M3 (and hopefully not, admittedly) ever became a burden. M3, at that stage, was everything I wanted it to be - an operating bracket that ensured that you could utilise 60-90% almost everywhere. 270hp/210lb/ft LSD and 1100kg's.

Unfortunately now, after a number of situations relying on a number of different people, it has undermined confidence and passion... to an extent. Lots of tasty ingredients - too many chefs. Ultimately the appeal for building a car from scratch is appealing, what kind of parameters are we looking at here?

I need to understand drivetrain reliability / rebuild intervals / standard preventative maintenance costs. As an instructor I like to work brakes hard on track, I like to be able to engage in 'circle work'. Point being i'm being told that after the E30 ownership I should hit the reset button and get into e46 m3 / e39 m5 / something which ticks all boxes but is a 'known quantity".

Give me a reason to get into one of these; i'm sure with the right guidance there is enough off the shelf equipment to make one of these reliable. Enjoyable. Fun. I get the modified car game - there is always, always an amount you are prepared to go to.

Aside from structural integrity what is THE weakest point on the car? Understand that addressing it adds to stress of other areas but what work has been done to understand and develop this?

Ah, was thinking (hoping?) someone might suggest this; what time does it kick off on Sunday? I can do a couple of hours up there possibly..

I think it really depends what you want. My daily car is an e46 m3. In every quantifiable way it's the superior car, it's reliable, very well made, has an engine that'll scream to 8200 rpm, can fit the shopping and children in it. It'd go round a track all day if I asked it to.

The car safely locked up in the garage is the GTA...... It's imperfect. But without wanting to sound weird, there's just something about it. If you're looking to avoid frustration then it's potentially not the right tool for the job - remember they're 25 years old now and need some effort. But on the other hand when the sun's out it's probably about as close as you can get to this without the 6 figure price tag....

If you're handy with the spanners though and can take the rough with the smooth then they're pretty tough old girls. Mine has done 200K... they can't be that fragile. Truth is it did 200K on it's original engine and as Lee will tell you, even then the compression figures weren't that off the mark.

And come on, the German thing has never been as cool as the French.

I've got all to see at the open day .Can take the grey turbo out for a spin ,red turbo is 'done' but not all back together but that should help you see what's what with them even more ++ I have the RATS' racer there with all sorts of mods for track +++ A Europa cup car shell to compare +++++ many shiny things and a couple of special engine builds on the bench .

Shame you couldn't make it .It was a good day and lots to see .
Red turbo is going back together now with all new shiny things .......
I have had a quick check on bodykit prices and you're looking at around 3,5k for the bits .Fitting and paint ?? probably another 6/7
+ the base car .Sorted one 5/6k with original paint .Add another 2/3 for unseens ,wheels,rubber etc .....knocking on 18k/20k ..

I also love the LeMans but by the time you by a solid donar car , the kit , have the kit fitted , painted etc you'll have paid most of what a half decent LeMans would cost anyway - and it will only ever be worth half an original in similar condition. Unless the kit is an original it will also be made of different material to the rest of the GTA body (I'm assuming the originals were made with the same process as the rest of the car - i.e pressure moulding whereas the kits would be fibreglass) which could well cause cracking issues as the bodies will flex differently where they join. I admire anyone who does it but if you can find one I'd snap up an original and pamper the life out of it :0)
