Speedo fix

Yep mine (1990) is just like that, too. It's the left-most connector on that picture with the green stripe around the middle (anti-water seal)

Good point, John, about disconnecting and re-connecting to clean up the contacts!

Ok found it but not touched it yet as need to get underneath. Is there a way of testing the signal from the pickup?

Quick answer.... No,.... unless you have an oscilloscope. But being a passive device (no moving parts),.... unless there is external damage to the wires, and the fact that it is intermittent and does actually work most of the time, I would say the sensor is OK.

Ok thanks that at least sounds positive. I'll have a look at the weekend hopefully but being held in a queue behind the Esprit radiator and not 348 driveshaft boots.

When I first got my GTA, the speedo was dead and I was told that although there are no moving parts, but over time the sensor pickup does attract metal particles which perhaps can affect the performance. So I had the garage remove the sensor, clean it up and refit.
Not too bad a job for access if it's on ramps, if not then apparently you need to have hands like a Gynaecologist to get to it.
