Historic tram footage

Postby pgoldsmith » Fri Jan 10, 2014 7:59 pm

This is a very interesting historical document. It shows a tram ride down Market St. in San Francisco shortly before the earthquake that destroyed the city almost completely. You can appreciate the dress of women , the antics of the big boys , the chaos of people, horses , bicycles, boys running , trams and cars without any obvious control or segregation.

It is one of the oldest films in the world (it survived the San Francisco earthquake of 1908 )

Four days later, most of those people were dead and the city was ruined .
Scenes filmed from a " tram " on Market Street in San Francisco , California. It's amazing how many cars already existed at that time. Trams crossing the street and appear to have a drive cable. ( The center rail )
The film was shipped to New York by train for processing and therefore survived the tragedy.

Watch with the sound turned on, as the sound track is pretty good.

Nice post, very interesting. Like the way they still had not worked out which side of the road to drive.. even have right hand drive cars!! That or the film was incorrectly loaded??
Thanks for the post!!
