CHILD SEAT FOR GTA?????? PLEASE HELP

Postby maple1 » Mon Apr 23, 2007 11:27 pm

I have a 1989 GTA Turbo with leather seats - has anyone come across a childseat which will fit in the front seat. I've tried the couple that I have but the GTA (ie v. prominent) head rests get in the way.
My 4 year-old is desperate to get in the car!

My 18 month old son fits in the front in his Recaro Young Sport seat. The seat adapts from 1 year old to 12 years old (remove inserts etc). It is a little expensive but a good seat.

I took him out in it last weekend and it fiited in fine, only issue was the knobs for the seat adjuster dug a liitle into the seat bolsters.

Can you not use a booster seat at 4 years old?

Agreed, really difficult to get the little blighters in the car.

In the back the headrests make it really uncomfortable for them, they have to sit on a booster but also have a cushion behind them 'cos of the headrest pushing their heads forward. In the front not a problem with a booster seat.

Maybe best to remove the beakc seats and fit a Recaro typr kids seat in the back. expensive to buy but over 12 years, about £1 per month!

Forgot to mention my son goes in his recaro seat in the front, as back seat only has lap belts!

I just chuck mine (7 and 10) in the back - no booster as it won't fit in the back seat but to be honest, I can't see how a booster would add to the safety with only a lap belt. Surely they are better just strapped into the seat with the lap belt, there's no need to have them raised up as there's no shoulder belt. I'd have thought that trying to wedge a booster seat in would just make the belt fit worse and increase the chance of them sliding under the seatbelt (is that whats known as submarining in the safety world?) in the even of a rapid stop.

The law appears to allow you to have completely unrestrained kids in the back of the car if your car doesn't have rear seatbelts or to use a lap belt if its the third belt and the others are being used already to hold kid seats and there's no room for a third kid seat. The problem here is that there's no room for the first child seat in the back, let alone a third!

From a safety perspective, I'm far happier having the kids wedged in the back with a lap belt than sitting up front, even in a car seat with the 3-point harness.

Booster Seat and the Law

Postby maple1 » Tue Apr 24, 2007 7:48 pm

Thanks for all the help so far on this - I had been informed that booster seats were no longer to be used (by my ex-wife) and actually threw away my old Saab booster'. On reflection I think she told me this that she could buy a very expensive new child seat - which was 'a nice colour'.

I see the law actually says that '15 to 36 kgs (aged around 4 years and upwards' is OK for a booster seat (I realise my son was under 4 when this law began - so that was the confusion!).

Anyone recommend a good booster seat (don't want another full child seat as boy getting big) that fits well on a GTA leather front seat?

Thanks

Dug this old post up as I'm now struggling to find a good car seat for my 1 year old that would fit the GTA. Has anyone gone as far as taking the back seat out and fitting one? Or have any better suggestions.

I tried the Britain eclipse in the back...works just on a lap belt but didn't really fit that well. The Ricardo young sport seemed to fit ok in the front once I removed the headrest but the sales person was moaning that the seat belt buckle being too high.

I have a recaro young sport in the back of my GTA. Fits perfectly, front or rear.

No I just pull the lap belt really tight (small as it will go pretty much) and there's no way the seat will move. I'm sure you could get Paul to fit you three points if you want them.

Thanks mr d....I'll give it a try but that's not the favourable option of the halfords safety police :-)

I'm going to give the britax prince a go when I can get down kiddiecare but Paul's three point conversion may be on the cards... :?
