Good news for classic motorists in budget

Postby stephendell » Thu Mar 21, 2013 1:34 am

There was more good news for enthusiast motorists, too, with the announcement that the Government’s cut-off date for classic cars’ VED exemption will now be extended by one year, meaning cars produced in 1973, will now be tax exempt. There’s no word yet on whether this extension will continue to roll forward in future years, though.

One other significant change for motorists is that SORN declarations will no longer have to be renewed each year. From now on, all SORN applications will be open-ended, and as such will apply until the car’s tax is renewed.

What’s more the grace period for failing to display a tax disc once purchased has been extended to 14 days.

Call me cynical, but I thing the tax disc grace period is only to allow the DVLA to be even less efficient!

TBH I am not even sure why a disc has tpo be displayed in these days of computer databases and ANPR

It surprised me to be honest, I thought they would ditch the free car tax for historics altogether as I suppose they are deemed to be far less "Green" than modern day vehicles

The thing is Si we as a country and in fact the whole world are potless. Something has to give otherwise we will join the likes of Greece, Italy, Spain and Cyprus who are well on the road to financial ruin....

The article was just a cutr and paste by the way, not my personal opinion.

Rolling 40 year VED exemption can't be bad and TBH not having to repeat SORNS will save me a lot of potential fines!

I knew you pasted it Steve..the fact remains.that they will not want to upset the large collector owners before the election as lets face it, its power and control they desire  and is their main and possibly only interest

The chancellor is trying to kick start the economy by giving Council tenants the right to buy their own houses ...but in another breath telling them.what they can spend their dole money on lol if they want to remain eligible for benefits ....with no work or jobs and no chance of getting a mortgage from the un-trusting banks who will want you to have been in a job for an unreasonable amount of time and then even if you have a job still will not lend you the money ...all.of a sudden they are over responsible NOW!! Rich coming from the bunch of idiots we trusted with our money and have all had to bale out in the first instance ....so pray tell; how is this going to boost the economy?!!! Faff pure and simple look busy everyone at least make it look like you know what your doing.

Lee; I appreciate the situation and realise we have to help them to help ourselves; but, in-order to be able to help these other countries first, I think we need a helmsman that knows what the terms port and starboard mean; we wont even mention bow and stern LOL.

There is a subtle balance between being frugal and investment and they the "Government" don't have a clue where or what that is ...the rich are ok, screw the poor make cuts more cuts ..and slap on more and more taxes; the words running around like a headless chicken and don't panic Captain Mainwaring spring to mind

There's more than one way to skin a cat and the Government cant see the wood for the trees if you ask me and they have chosen a route and they are blindly sticking their heads deeper and deeper in to the sand.

What has this to do with classic cars ---On the bright side we now all have less to spend on and in them, if we are lucky enough to still have a job ...that's what so not having to sorn my vehicle every year and the fact that they have increased free tax for classic cars that are 40 plus years of age and tend to be the most expensive type of classic to purchase therefore owned by the more affluent of us. Like I said how has that helped the majority of us?

PPS Steve whats all this underlining crap I did not put this in my post and why when I add a smiley does it adds it at the very end of the post and not where I want them. We need to update this Forum to stay with the times ....be better than the government and listen to your electorate

I have not had a tax disc displayed for 14 years in the Spider and I have never been pulled so the cost of a fine and 3 points my be cheaper than taxing it anyway

Steve please see above the forum is no longer compatible with android software, it clashes badly it also clashes now with simple things like Smileys on my work network too. I find it almost impossible to to type a readable post, with spelling wrong not as typed, the screen jumping around all over the place I cant place the cursor to edit properly and 9 times out of 10 the post doesn't read as originally sent. It took me 10 plus minutes to send the above e-mail and many many times I just don't bother to try and edit  This is sent from work not my mobile hence you can read it Frustrated Member!!

Yes that might be the case, but at least Italy and I think many other European countries are fair when it comes to cars over 25 years. They have a set fee for road Tax £50, no matter which engine size.

I don't expect free tax, but with the miles I do in my cars and most classic cars enthusiasts, a lower road tax would be a more fair deal. Anyway we all know we are a lot more greener in keeping these old snotters on the road rather than buying a new car.

So true, the amount of Green House gases produced producing a new car far outweighs the gases we emit on the number of limited miles most of us drive. Its always been the same Phil people are reliant on their cars so tax them to death!!!

I'm off to Italy  less tax for cars n better mountain roads :P

I thought the supertax had come in????

http://www.autocar.co.uk/forum/any-othe ... -cars-here

http://community.evo.co.uk/forums/threa ... adID=85116

550 Maranello will now cost over €4000 per year for road tax

And it's done on power not CO2, so even if the newer model has better fuel consumption it'll cost more if it puts out more power.
I'm just here for the gasoline.
