Rad Fan

My rad fan's seized up, and I'd really like to replace it before I go over at the weekend. Does anybody know of any fan motors that fit from other Renno's, or any other cars for that matter? Richard changed his for a 21 diesel rad fan motor, but I'm having some trouble locating one at any of my local breakers. Any other suggestions?

I think from memory its the same as that off a R5 turbo. But I'd check, I know I had a 2nd hand one fitted by Paul at ARR and I'm sure that's where its shared from.

Else look at the far superior fans from Kenlowe and the like - one of them must fit and be far more efficient.

It is a bit of work, but the bearing in the fan can be replaced. I think there were small rivets holding the cage around the bearing, but these can be removed and small bolts with nyloc nuts or Loctite can be used instead. The rear is a bush which has a felt around it, and should be oiled. My brushes were fine.

I have done this on my car. The bearing cost $5. Total time 2 Hours.

Any bearing shop would be able to supply it, but I can't remember what the number was, but it was a common type. Get the type with rubber seals each side rather than the open sided type that is standard on the fan.

Basically you will have to pull the fan apart to get the number off the bearing. Sorry.

Just picked up a fan and motor from a Laguna diesel (plus the necessary part of the loom). It's huge, but I'm thinking I'll be able to modify the basket slightly to make it fit if I remove the original item. Would that be sacrelige? I was thinking I could have it on a rocker switch, or on one of the blank switches in the dash, and I could turn it on in traffic when the temp reads 90 or more. Opinions appreciated!

Oh! I meant to ask, (and its probably a stupid question), but what direction do I need the fan to spin? I'm assuming I need it to pull air through from the front to the back, rather than push air through it. Would I be correct? :?

The standard fan Pulls. Pulling is more effifient (I think kenlowe quote 20%) and you also get better cooling when the fan is off because nothing is in the way of normal air flow and the rad..

That depends if you have air con I think... the a/c cars have the fans on the front of the rad, the non a/c cars have it fixed to the back of the rad...

They all have the fans on the back as standard. One for regular cars. Two for aircon cars.

However... I moved fans to the front, fitted the correct handed blades and they work much better.

I understand the airflow interruption but have never been convinced about the efficiency. Much prefer to stand in front of a fan on a hot day than behind it. :wink:

Hi Rupert,

I suppose that's because most UK cars had the aircon retro fitted & not all by the same company. Presumably they may have fitted the fans in different places or perhaps a previous owner had the same idea as me :wink:

In light of that I'll revise my statement to: 'all cars with aircon fitted at the factory had two fans at the back' !!

Li Liam,
I had the same problem as you on my atmo (one fan at rear & siezed) I took a fan from what looked likea 5 based van with a diesel lump in it at the scrap yard. The blade was slightly larger but the motor had the same mountings and fitted the cradle fine. Bit of a job getting it in as I could only undo the lower two cradle bolts though.

Had more of a problem with the electrics though and in the end wired it all up from scratch. I took a feed dierctly from the battery (via relay & choke) to the fan. I also ran a new wire to the switch from relay earth and have a double terminal at the relay, to allow for an additional dash control to be fitted later if req. Its not ignition reliant now but only seems to run on for about a minute after stopping the engine if hot.

I also had to repair the engine bay fan, it was only a duff sensor (£40) but this does seem to run on for a long time, maybe 10 minutes, not sure if this is right. Looking at a circuit diagram I thought it went through a timer (2 minutes max!), any ideas anyone?
