after a bit more investigation looks like the electric window motor is a little sick.
The motor has power but no drive, you can feel something inside the black box trying to turn as you operate the switch :? Is it worth taking the motor out for a look?, i undid the 3 10mm nuts but not sure about the rest of it, looks kinda complicated to me  ......

remove all the mechanism motor, lifting cable, etc the motor is held on by 3 clip pegs, once off spray with plenty of wd40 and clean the drive gear. opperate the switch and the motor should work. once you get it working spray the lifting tube with plenty of wd40 and move the slide up and down the whole thing just gets stuck with dirt and rust i did this with mine and got it working again. hope this helps

Dug this old post as my passenger window decided it wouldn't go up the other day... good thing its sunny at mo  took the whole thing apart cleaned it lubricated it there is power as it should but it still wouldn't go up, goes down fine though :D

Is there a way to open the motor itself to try and fix it or should I just get a new one? In which case where can I find one? Does the club still have some? Is it common with other cars?

I beleive

Postby si21 » Sun Jul 29, 2012 6:38 pm

...that there is a small earth cable which bolts to door pillar, if I remeber correctly it accessible in the footwell, remove the metal sill over panel protector made in alley and then you can remove the panel. It would be worth a check anyway.

It looks like it was actually the switch that caused the problem although that doesn't make sense to me as there was still power at the motor

Anyway at least it now works without a helping hand so its win win :D

Does that include this little switch from an A610?

It's for the automatic closing and as you can see my lever has snapped. :(

Looks like a micro switch.
Maybe a new one could be adapted to fit, and have the same profile???

Looks like its a Crouzet 83 169 8 microswitch to which you add an arm (there is a choice of 6?).
Their catalogue is on line if you google it.
You can find them at RS components but they are 40+ quid plus delivery. I think they are expensive as they are waterproof.

There will probably be cheaper suppliers, but RS is relatively easy to buy from.

Wire comes out the wrong side, but I expect its close enough.

My electric windows worked reasonably well when I got the car about 5 years ago. Soon after however, they became virtually inoperable.

At first I thought it was the switches so I took them apart and gave them a good clean but with no improvement. When you click the window switch you can hear a very slight sound from the motor so the switches seem to work ok.

Reading this topic I thought it's probably a similar issue re dirty worm drive.

So - I've followed all the directions in this topic to remove the left hand door trim and completely remove the electric window mechanism itself from the door. I sprayed heaps of WD-40 in the worm drive and hooked up the terminals to a stand-alone 12V battery and it works perfectly. So I thought all was fixed but then I plugged the motor back into the connector in the door and tried the switch - still nothing but a slight hum,

I unplugged the connector from the motor and hooked up my multimeter to the connector. When I click the window switch I get a reading of 12V which tells me the switch must be working. When I switch the multimeter to measure current I only get a reading of about 0.2 amps when I click the switch. I'm not sure how much current is supposed to flow to the motor but this seems extremely low and explains why there's a slight hum but no movement from the window motor. Any ideas what could be casuing this?

Having the car running seems to give no improvement at all (though it was only idling).

I then checked the earths and they seem ok (though I'm not sure where to find the engine earth). The battery is brand new. There are no other electrical gremlins going on with the car except for some reason every time I start the car the trip computer display needs to be reset (even if I haven't disconnected the battery previously). It didn't do this when I got the car so not sure why it's doing it now.

A final note on earths - do I assume that if the bolt is tight and the strap isn''t broken that the earth is OK?

This is starting to drive me mad. Any further suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Cheers

In a word no. If you're referring to the battery to chassis main earth strap then best approach is to undo it and clean with a wire brush / wire wool. The contact point is pretty small and even if the bolt is tight it doesn't mean it's a clean contact.

Might explain the trip computer? Give it a try anyway, it's a 10 minute job.
I'm just here for the gasoline.
