Potentiometer......

Hi Guys,

My car has been off the road for around 4 weeks now.
I'm struggling and the garage is struggling to find a potentiometer for it.

Anyone know of a 2nd hand part going or a replacement part?

Not quite sure, but it fits onto the throttle body.

Apparently it is needed to tune the engine.

Do you mean the 'Idling speed potentiometer'? It looks like a small black plastic cylindrical shaped part, clipped to the right side of the engine bay, with two wires coming out from the bottom to the engine?

If this is the part you mean, I think you can still order a new one from a Renault dealer. Expensive though for such a small part. The wire broke on mine and I was quoted £102! I managed to solder the wires back on instead.

I found though, that my car still ran fine without it even connected! It just meant I wouldn't have been able to adjust the idling speed and I had an electrical warning light and service light constantly illuminated on the dashboard.

If you take the plastic housing of the front of the throttle pot (it should unclip) you will see that inside, it only consists of two standard microswitches. It can be easily fixed, no matter what goes wrong with it!

The throttle spline has a flap on it which activates the switches

At idle, the first switch is activated, telling the ecu there is no throttle. The moment you touch the accellerator you should hear a click, as the first switch is released. This is now to 5-70% throttle section that tells the ecu you basically at part throttle (if it sounds very basic, its because it is) Any further that 70% throttle, you will hear another click as the second microswitch is activated telling the ecu your at full throttle at put the extra fuel in. Its as simple as that.

Now, if at idle the first switch isnt activated, the ecu wont know what revs to sit at and it will fluctuate. This is probably your problem.
