The 300 has now got a sold sign on it the Gods were not with me on this one, but every cloud as they say because I've just found one of my all time favourites come up for sale its an Alfa Romeo Montreal looks to be in superb condition so may go full speed ahead on this one and perhaps a Venturi once I'm bored with the Esprit.

I have had a fair few alfa's, must say there is something special about them, but they must have a V6 under the bonnet!!!

Just in case but I am sure you know the Montreal has a V8.

Me I have had many Alfa’s also though never a V6! I keep telling myself I should have a V6 but never commit.

I had 3 of the proper Alfa DOHC engine cars, 2 X Alfetta GTV and a 1980's Guilletta, and four boxer engine cars, 2 'Sud's and 2 Sprint's. I currently have a kit car with a boxer engine and the daily drive is a 156 1.8 TS, mind you that is an adapted FIAT engine. :x

The Montreal has been top of my list for years but finding a good one is both expensive and difficult, this one is in Holland and was owned by a Swiss guy, 50K miles and very tidy. The engine is a V8 and is from one of the racing Alfa's, left hand drive though and when I tried an Integrale Evo 2 I found it too hectic but the Alfa is a bit more sedate

Hope this one works out for you, but a big word of warning none-mechanically.

Though the car is in Holland be ultra certain that all of the import / export taxes have been paid on it from the Swiss side of the border, the money on taxes etc will just keep mounting and mounting. Before I bought my Venturi and whilst Sterling v the Swiss Franc and Euro was very strong I was seriously considering a Venturi 260 Atlantique limited edition execution 001 and it seemed a very good price at the time after conversion about £16000 but when I spoke to the Customs and Excise people they went through so many taxes both Swiss and UK that I gave up when the amount got to a shade over £4000.

Thanks for that Paul, so I should contact the vendor and get confirmation that all taxes and duty have been paid and that no outstanding sums exist.

I would, after all of that with the C&E I would be very nervous of an unexpected bill landing on the door mat.

It was a real pity as I really did like the 260 Atlantique, they all came in a very nice blue metallic with grey and blue leather and a carbon fibre dashboard. The 260 Atlantique was a lightened 260 limited to a run of about 25 each with a dashboard plaque.

I’ll send you an email with some photos of the car.

With reference to the 210 Transcup I have just received an email from “Triskel” on the Communaute Venturi; Triskel looks after the Census on the Communaute.

He says the car has not been for sale since it was bought over here in the UK, it was bought by a French man called Bernard who has had it in his “stable” for the last few years and is very happy with the car.

I guess this means that advert is years out of date and needs to be removed as it may give others the idea that the car is for sale, or is this a ruse by the dealer by leaving it on he might get an enquiry to which he says, “Oh Sorry sold that this week but would you like to consider something else? I’ve got a very nice.............”

Sneaky devil I can vouch for the fact that I got the impression it was in stock and for sale, perhaps my silly offer threw him into confusion then later he decided to come clean. On the car front I have decided to put the Esprit up for sale and its on Pistonheads at the moment I am also looking to try another of my 'like to own' cars in the form of a Citroen Maserati there are quite a few around and I always loved them so quirky. I'm still planning on going over to Holland to look at an orange one and a red version of the Alfa Montreal.

I know what you mean Paul, the one I'm looking at has just been re-built by Brodie (probably spelt that wrong) and is mechanically perfect just needs some bits doing. The other is very much like your old car all done but nearly £30K and yes I've decided I want to keep the A610 I'd like to keep the Esprit but her indoors is on the moan and will probably give me more grief than I want so the Esprit is the sacrificial lamb.

Wow! A Citroen SM! Interesting car with a Maserati V6, hydro-pneumatic suspension, self-leveling lights that swiveled with the steering and electrically assisted brakes, I read an article in a classic car magazine years ago, can’t remember which one, the author said they were like a light switch, on or off, no retardation or face on the windscreen and nothing in between. Full of innovation that was unheard of in its day and which has filtered down to today’s more humdrum offerings. You are braver that me on this one David, I would opt for the Alfa between the two.

Buying one would be interesting and I'm off to Essex Tuesday to see one. In my youth I used to admire one that was parked in a house in my road and I used to wait around to see it rise up in the air when the owner started it and combined with its looks just facsinated me, my dad used to say the guy had more money than sense, well I've probably grown up to be that man too! But I've got to try one before the Alfa and if I like it the place I'm going to in Holland has both cars in stock so I might be able to do a direct comparison, and its a good excuse to have an extended week-end in Amsterdam enjoying all that the city offers.
