A5 GTA

Postby jonathan » Sun Feb 12, 2012 12:09 pm

Just thought Id update you on "the turd that wouldnt flush" - how harsh is that! I bought it on Friday from Paul in Burnley. After a test drive decided to drive it back home (just past Newcastle upon tyne approx 150 miles). Car drove fine and got better as we went along, everything working except the speedo & heater (no heat fan full on only), she did start to get a bit hot when we were at the Tyne Tunnel but it made it. Had the car on the ramps yesterday & looks pretty good underneath, subframe, wishbones etc are all solid, just a little surface rust. Painwork wise front end & rear bumper need doing. There is some dampness to the carpets which may tie in with the heater, although on the drivers side??, so some fun to be had. The fans are hard wired, so need to start with the cooling system. Car has been off the road (Sorn) for the last six years, so Im pretty pleased with the condition, although Im fully aware that little jobs can become pretty huge pretty quickly!

With regards to the history (from the service book and paperwork I have). The car has a full main dealer history for the first 80k with renault in hull & one service with renault in manchester and was a company car with Swan Bearnings (Mr D Bedford), It was then sold in 1995 (after over £4k worth of invoices in 94) to a Mr E. Cash of Knutsford in Cheshire for £7500. After then all is blank until 2004 when Paul bought it. The plate seems to have been on the car since it early days.

Good stuff .

150 miles is a good old trek with suspect heads so you may have a bargain .
Blowing cold is sure sign of blocked rad and/or general shite in the system .
Flush out the whole water system .Take the rad off and reverse flush .Pull the drain plugs from the side of the block and flush the lump .
Matrix is most probably leaking if carpets continue to get wet .It will pool in the blower housing then slosh out under cornering .

Thanks, its just deciding to what level I want to get the car too, it drives as well as my previous 2 Gta's, but there is a good case to do a nut and bolt restoration. Its taxed & tested till the end of the year & once the engine gets the ok I think I will worry about that next winter.

Its actually closer to 'turd' than 'beautiful' at the moment. Trying to sort out a few electrical niggles, fans & speedo, but half the relays dont match the workshop wiring manual I have..... its going to be fun. Did have a bit of a result as the guy down the road has just offered to buy the plate on the car, so some good news.

Restoration

Postby jonathan » Thu Feb 16, 2012 11:54 am

Sorry, should really post this under a new topic but am unable to. Can anybody help me in getting a handle on costs of restoration, in two minds as to what to do with the GTA, just keep it running or restore the car properly from the ground up. Im pretty sure the car is basically sound but would look to do the following;
stripping & protecting the subframes & suspension etc
full decent respray
maybe a top end engine rebuild (if this proves to be a problem area) - Im I better off with a decent second hand engine?
replace radiators & hoses.

I know that its impossible to be totally accurate but some ball park figures would be a great help. Many thanks.

DIY ??

Parts are not that bad for the basics .Apart from rear wishbone bushes .

Strip and refurb all running gear £500 + parts
Engine cradle incl engine/box removal £800 ( out ,off ,refurb and back in )
Respray ( andy001) circa £1600 ??
Top end rebuild assuming out already for frame £250 + parts as required .
Replace all hoses and rad £500 + parts ( rad £200 ish, hoses as listed on this site )

That's more or less labour costs if I were to do it so about £2k ish 60 hrs .But then I know what I'm doing

Parts will start to add up if you go for new dampers/springs etc £600
.Engine parts can be hard to source but say £150 for a pair of head gaskets ,chains tensioners guides + seals bits and bobs another £200 .

I spy another opportunity for a shameless RATS plug

Or if you're a little bit mad or French

Yes about that I would think .

About top GTA money but you of course will not find one out there with it all freshly refurbed
I have one here that will be about that when finished .say £2k for the base car /engine/box + labour + parts around 5k then a bit of paint to make it mint takes it to 6.
