Anyone got a spare for early non black box version ? Feckin wire keeps snapping as very brittle :roll:

The wire on my tube sender had snapped on my 88 GTA Turbo.
I managed to re-solder it to the tags at the top of the tube.

Your right though, that coiled wire seems to get very hard and brittle.
I did think about replacing it with some new wire, but i guess it needs to meet a specific resistance. So i didnt bother and just repaired instead.
2016 Mercedes A200d 2.2 AMG, 7sp DCT.
2003 Renault Laguna II 3.0 24v V6 Diamonique Auto.

Already re-soldered a couple of times ,right faff as it just kept on snapping off till I got to a more pliable section ( so I thought ) :roll:

I take it the wire is soldered on to a solder tag, (I haven't seen one of the early ones) if so, before re soldering, slip a short length (20mm) of non adhesive heat shrink sleeve on to the wire. Once soldered.... slip the heat shrink up the wire till it covers the solder tag and the wire. Apply heat from heat gun, and it will then enclose the tag and a short bit of wire. This should keep the point where the wire joins the tag from flexing.
I might be tempted to cut two lengths of sleeve, sliding both down the wire, and after re soldering, slip one over the joint and heat, then slip the other over the original and heat...... twice the protection. :wink:

Good thinking ,will give it a try ,if I can be bloody arsed ...speedo died today about the same time ( not that one due in the post :wink: )

I think you will find that the perceived "hard and brittle" effect is more due to the fact that this wire is in coil form and is in fact a loose spring. In order to maintain its coil shape it will have to be of necessity fairly stiff. :wink:

The coil will not be resistive in its self, the resistance element of the sensor will be what the float contacts as it goes up and down. :wink:

Lee, if you wish, remove the speedo board from the RHS of the Instrument Cluster and pop it in the package you are posting to me. I can go over the board and remove any element of intermittency in it. This, of course, does not guarantee to cure your fault as it might be elsewhere, but it will eliminate the speedo board being at fault. If you do remove the board, make sure you save the two very important spacers on the screws and keep in a safe place. :wink:

Thanks Jon .
I think the owner is keen to collect the car this week and it's away having some specialist fitting atm so unlikely I'll strip it out .
I do have another dash in the garage so may I pop that in the package for the once over ? If it's then known working a straight swap out might be on the cards .
