Spring Naviscat - Sunday 11th March 2012

Postby jules » Sat Nov 19, 2011 8:47 pm

Hi Folks

Earlier this year Nicola and I "won" the chance to organise the Spring Naviscat rally for the MG Car club so I though I'd extend the invite to the RAOC crew...

Regs are now available too:

This will be a MSA regulated event based in North Kent and will involve several clubs and a whole rake of motors from all era's.

As you are probably aware, a Naviscat is like a navigational rally mixed with a treasure hunt, based on plotting a 6 digit grid reference on a map and finding the clue....Really not a tricky as it sounds and is just a good excuse to have a blast through some good roads and a pub lunch at the end!

The event will probably start at The Bull Hotel, Wrotham, Kent and run for about 4 hours ending with lunch at a country pub.

There are prizes for 1st ,2nd, 3rd overall and club championships. If there is enough interest (>5) I'll run a competition for the RAOC entrants and perhaps Mr Taylor can offer up some points if the RAOC championship is running next year.

I'll publish more details and a quick guide to Naviscat if folks are interested shortly.

The clubs involved are

MG Car Club
The Inter Register Club
Renault Alpine Owners Club
Midget and Sprite Club
MG Owners Club
MG Octagon Club

...so the challenge is on....

The cost will be approximately £9 ADV or £10 on the day.

If you interested please post or PM....

regs available here: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccse/events/ ... 12Regs.pdf

Cheers

Jules

............here's a few details of what to expect.

In short a Naviscat is a bit like a mixture of a crossword puzzle, map reading and blasting your car down some country lanes. It is actually a lot easier to do than it may seem by my explanation below.

The basic details are as follows.

There are 40 questions handed out, each one has a 6 number grid reference that you plot onto an ordnance survey map.

You then drive to each of the locations in any order you like and try to answer the question or clue related to that location. There are 3 types of question, worth 1, 2 or 3 points. A 1 pointer will be something very easy that you can probably get by just driving past like a pub name for example. A 3 pointer is much harder and may involve getting out the car and exploring a bit.

The event usually lasts for about 3 hours or so followed by a pub lunch and a prize giving.

Its really all about a bit of friendly competition and a chance to drive some nice country roads.

There are lots of ‘old hands’ willing to offer advice, One of the regulars is putting together a starters guide which I will circulate nearer the time. You are also welcome to email/pm/call me for a chat about the event if you have any questions,

I should have the entry forms available in the next few days as will forward you the details and then hopefully I will see you on the 11th!

Yes, totally.....the only stipulation is to be a member, although I think there is a possibility Mr Dell might sort out a day membership thing if I ask him nicely.

Optimistically, if I get enough entries then I'd like to run two classes, perhaps as follows, but happy for suggestions.

Class a) Up to 1995 (Alpine's, R5's etc)
b) Post 1995 (Spiders Clio's etc)

If members have a car off the road then there is an 'other cars' class already if they wish to come in something else...

Any chance you could offer up some points for the RAOC championship Mr Taylor? :D

The regs and entry form has been published on the MGCC site.

Please follow this link http://www.mgcars.org.uk/mgccse/events/SpringNaviscat2012Regs.pdf

10:00 - 10:45 Sign on at The Bull
http://www.thebullhotel.com/

11:00 Start - 14:30 Finish

Followed by an optional hot buffet lunch at The Bull.

RAOC entrants will be able to compete for Overall, Non-MG and Novice classes. I will run some classes just for us if I get enough entrants. These will be specified in the final regs published on the day.

I have also got beginers guide to Naviscat rallies which I will post up in a bit.

Any questions please email/pm etc.

p.s....can someone post a link to the regs on the first post for me?

...wonder what the lowest attendance record for a RAOC event is

...anyway, some more info...what do you need to take part....

1. Ordnance Survey Map 188 (Maidstone & Royal Tonbridge Wells)
2. Romer

I should be able to provide these to anyone if required, the romer is not essential but makes plotting the grid reference easier!

An example of a question might look like

Q1. 521471 Where is the French Family?

A good example of how you would plot this on a map can be found on this link.

I now have the minimum number of entries...and the first Alp (Cheers Lee!) so we are on for the 11th

I am limited to 50 teams overall. Please let me know if you are up for it, don't let Lee take all the prizes
