Fortunately everything bar the oil level guage was working when I bought mine. Still haven't fixed it. Speedo is even accurate, set against a GPS.
I do sound like one of the lucky ones.

"A very lucky find on ebay", but I also know an auto-electrican who can rebuild them at half the renault cost, just depends what needs doing. For both bearings, both slip rings (the contacts on the rotor that the brushes go onto) and the regulator (which includes both brushes) £58 +VAT.

Apparantly the brushes/regulator unit normally last about 70k miles. The parts are cheap, just the time to take it apart/clean/reassemble bumps up the costs.

I found this chap after contacing wood auto, a rep called me back and said "the A14N96 is a very expensive unit" and they gave me local contact details.

http://www.woodauto.com/Unit.aspx?Man=P ... Ref=A14N96

The best Renault could do was £99+VAT for an exchange unit, p/n given to me by David Gentleman but I have since accidently deleted David's email.

And mine was after a long run, 499 miles in a day, the cage carrying the ball bearings had disintigrated in to bits of tangled swarf.
