I read Octanes price guide in my local libary yesterday and the prices quoted were about £750 - a bag of sand more than I think the cars are actually going for.

If all sellers marked the prices up a bit and stuck to it people would have to stump the money up if they wanted one that badly, the problem is the cheaper that sell for the less money the prosepective owner is likely to have to maintain them so they just get driven into the ground and bodged up, when they find out the cost of the parts etc. I have seen this happen to the R21Tthe cars are then worth more as breakers hence they are disappearing at a great rate of knotts!!! :(

car values .... some thoughts

Perhaps we should think twice before posting negative comments on car values for sale . It just isn’t good for the marque.
If as enthusiasts, we see low values in the cars as being a good thing it ultimately devalues the model.. Negative comments on this forum can holdback price movement of the GTA and Turbo models. look around and see what other rare, low production , high performance car is out there and the values they command . in that context we should view a low mileage pristine ex museum example as being worth the money- there is probably only a handful of cars out there in this condition. Just because I cant afford it doesn’t mean it isn't worth the money asked.-

I would argue that on the basis of style , performance rarity manufacturing technology and practicality the GTAs represent something quite rare- a very usable and collectable car. Currently I think the cars are undervalued . Yyou might argue that’s to our benefit , which in the short term it is, nevertheless, It must be remembered that these can be expensive cars , both to maintain and restore , if we constantly push down the values of the model with disparaging remarks , ultimately they will end up disappearing off the roads totally. As it stands it only takes a small knock for a GTA to be written off by the insurance company and consigned to a parts breaker .
Compared to Lotus esprit turbo, Porsche or RS Cosworth. prices 10-15k for a good one looks cheap in my eyes.
(perhaps the website valuations should be reviewed they are a bit out of date cap guides for 2005 are not the most relavant.)

What do others think?

I would say the prices are on the up. I sold mine for just over 7K, 6 months ago. And i would say she was worth every penny.

As others pointed out to me when i first started looking at GTA's, there are good ones, and bad ones, as such the price margin between the 2 is huge. Anywhere from 2.5k to 15k at the moment it seems.
They are very under-rated, and under priced in the current market in my opinion. They are a great all round daily driver car and still reasonably practical, when compared to similar cars of its era.

Double edged sword for me ...I need them cheap so I can afford them but they need to be fetching a higher rate for people to spend money getting them back into shape ........:? :lol:

I spoke to Andy Bond at WSR he says that nice 21's are selling for upto£3,000 and thats to the General Public on e-bay not people generally assoscuated with the mark :shock: :shock: :shock: I know Bob the mint black phase 1 went for a liitle ove r that I think a little while ago.

I think it would be nice to see a little improvement in value I am not rerally worried about the price going through the roof but I suppose I would like to see the nice GTA's going for £7 - 8,000 on a regular basis, I am happy for A610's to go for £10 - 12,000

I don't think you can justify saying the manufacturing technology is anyway special or unique for the time. It was done on the cheap... the quality of the fibre, the preparation, the delamination / osmosis issues etc..

The engine is a low-tech crate motor, and I mean for that period of manufacture (not relating to present)… the technology is somewhat lacking…

The technical reliability of the complete package is shocking let’s face it, no point trying to paint it any other way… it had issues right out of the box..

I think the initial outlay on any GTA is just your entry fee, roll up for the mystery tour, as Stephen Dell used to put it, be ready to replace every part under the skin… :-)
... A diamond is only a piece of coal that did well under pressure... PRV afflicted, may be I need to squeeze harder!!!!

This has not been my experience.
However, my car was very well looked maintained, looked after and polished by previous owner.

Maybe, but put into context the GTA Turbo was as fast as the 328 and Mondial from Ferrari at the time (neither of which is without faults in terms of quality) and was quicker and more powerful than the 944 and 944S - neither of which used a 'crate motor'.

The PRV wasn't exactly advanced, but a lot of the more advanced stuff from Lotus, Ferrari, Lancia, Alfa et al probably isn't able to do anything like the mileage that a lot of GTAs have without major re-builds.

It's not perfect, but I saw an example of what an E30 M3 had spent on it a while back to keep it up to top notch and it shows back then that BMW build quality was no where near as high as you might expect. It's an old car like the GTA.

What I've said before, is it's a shame Renault don't support the older cars anything like as well as BMW, Porsche or Ferrari. Most (not all) Renault dealers would happily see them rot rather than take up time with parts orders or servicing.

You wouldn't get the same treatment at BMW if you pitched up in an E30 M3 or Porsche if you turned up in a 911 RS. :cry:
