the mid 80s was the change over time when most manufacturers started painting plain colour vehicles in basecoat and clear , metalics had been painted in this way for some time. its quite possible all gta's were painted in a clear over base paint.
the test is to tcut the car if the cloth turns red its single layer paint if theres no colour on the cloth its lacquer.
