GTA Stereo Wiring - ISO

Hi all,

I've searched and read a few threads on this (including the article in Technical Help), but I still can't figure out what's going on. I'm trying to fit an aftermarket stereo (Sony) but want to convert to ISO so I can refit the original, so dont wish to butcher the wiring.

The main issue is that the connectors in the car dont seem to match anything out there in car audio shops, they are certainly not like Autoleads PC2-15-4. The main connector is a 6-block (3 male, 3 female) coloured yellow, red, white, plus a second black 5 pin female connector.

Can anyone advise where I can get a harness/adapter to go from those to standard ISO's. Otherwise I'll be forced to cut cables and manually wire it in.

I found that the Autoleads ISO adapter for a Jeep Cherokee fitted closest (physically) for the harness that was in my car. Had to trim some plastic off but then realised that I had to completely re-map all the wires - by testing each one. Also, the main harness doesn't have an earth - I left my clock / display part in the car and took the earth from that as per the original Philips stereo.

I used a large bit of choc-block to remap all the wires, but now I have an ISO harness block in the car.

I'm not 100% sure I got the +ve and -ve for each speaker correct - someone posted recently about doing this using a 9V battery but I got each speaker and all the relevant connections working. The mapping I found is posted in the technical section.

One thing I did note when trying to get a harness was that what was listed as being the right one was totally wrong on the Autoleads info. Male/female mis-match even! I have a late GTA with the later Philips stereo, so it's possible that what I came up with won't work for everyone.

Before you start cutting I will check what I have in the old tool box at work as I think I have what you need.

I should point out that I didn't cut or modify any of the original wiring of the car - just re-wired the ISO-to-non-ISO connector wires using the choc-block. Easy to return to original

I find I have the same problem.

The leads for my old philips unit are a 7 female spade connector plug (set like [IIIIIII] , a 3 spade connector plug (but only 2 wires) also like [III] , and what I assume to be a black earth cable on it's own.

I'm planning to rewire in the normal Autoleads connector wires, but that has 13 wires going to the plug... that's four too many....

Having just got back home a couple of hours ago and jet lagged, I am not too shure exactly what you are after as my Alp Radio has an eleven pin connector for power/speakers, and a 7 pin din for the remote switching, but as you will see from the pic below, the 11 pin connector is not shown on the original manual cct diag, but when I wanted to fault find mine on the bench, I did mark up all the leads, and drew a pic (top left) of my 11 pin connector. This may be of help. As the diag shows it differently, there may have been an updated radio fitted on later Alps which they did not bother to amend......who knows

IIRC the suggested Autoleads adapter for GTA is also female - i.e. expecting the car's harness to have male connections, which is why I ended up with something for a Jeep!

Note that this does not include the earth/-ve connection. This is connected to the original clock and presumably is resolved via the connections from the original Phillips radio to the clock/display. However there is a spade connector for the earth on the back of the clock that I connected my Autoleads earth to:


Sounds like this is different to what you have, Rupert. However, I found the following in my wiring diagrams book:

3-pin connector:
Pin; Colour (in french, sorry); description
Pin 3; VIO/JA; REAR RH Speaker -ve
Pin 1; JA; Accessories, Radio

7-pin connector:
Pin 1; VIO/VE; REAR RH +ve speaker
Pin 2; VIO; FRONT RH -ve speaker
Pin 3; VIO/RG; FRONT RH +ve speaker
Pin 4; BA/JA; REAR LH -ve speaker
Pin 5; BA/VE; REAR LH +ve speaker
Pin 6; BA; FRONT LH -ve speaker
Pin 7; BA/RG; FRONT LH +ve speaker

Then there is a single connection (M13) that is black (NO) for the EARTH (GROUND) RADIO

Colours:

BA = white
BE = blue
JA = Yellow
RG = Red
VE = Green
VI = Mauve (presumably, this is VIO in the above - I remember seeing lots of purply coloured wires!)
