subframe stripdown

Hi guys,

I'm getting my subframe ready for powdercoating, so it's out of the car and I am now removing engine/gearbox.

To remove engine/gearbox, I assume the driveshafts need to be removed. Do they need to be removed at the transmission end or the hub end?

Unfortunately I didn't think to loosen the hub nuts before removing the subframe from the car - it's a bit harder now. Any tips on disconnecting the driveshafts at the transmission?

Hi Simon,

Yep, still a non-member. It hadn't even crossed my mind to be honest with the amount of work I have going on at the moment with this restoration. But thanks for bringing it up and reminding me.

This subframe is meant to be going for powdercoating tomorrow morning at 7am - any chance someone can give some tips on how to remove the driveshafts?

Knock out the split pins at the gear box end ,you will need a 6mm drift , leave the shaft in the hub .If you've not drained the box it will get a bit messy .

If you dont have a drift, Bodge it with a nail and cut the pointed end off.
Just make sure that the is room for it to come right out the exit side.... between the castle nut bits.

Thanks Simon - hopefully it should come out ok tonight. For some reason I didn't see a split pin when I was looking at it last night, but now that I know it is there I'll find it and get the driveshafts off that way.

line the hole up with a gap in the gearbox casting and knock them through from top to bottom, I beleive if you knock them through from bottom to top you can get them wedged on the high points of the casting around the drive shafts. it is then a paint to get em back ...especially if removing whilst on the car.

He means "roll pin" not split pin.

The best drift I've ever found was a super long M6 cap screw (ie high tensile) from the rocker cover of a Safrane.... still have it in my toolbox!

Who's the bigger pikey - at least a capscrew is high tensile steel and a very specific smidge less than 6mm innit innit...er... onnit

an' an' anyway, the problem with a drift/punch is it tends to have a handle which gets in the way when you're butt up against the gearbox. I think I originally used the bolt to punch the bloody punch out after it got stuck.

John was under some time pressure, I'm sure he will be putting some long punches on his Christmas list.
