QUERIES FROM NEW MEMBER

Postby stephendell » Sun May 08, 2005 11:30 am

On behalf of a new member

After 15 years I took the plunge two weeks ago and purchased my first GTA....

Whilst general sound the girl needs some TLC and I need to gain knowledge, pretty quickly from fellow owners.......

Having owned a Scimitar GTE in another life I know what a great source of help and knowledge fellow users and a good club is... However having used and looked at the web site for a while I can't see any local clubs This could be that we are few and far between? The Wilts/Glouscester area seems to contain 4 or 5 owners however and there are many like me who initially haven't entered a location so there could be more!

Whats the way forward on this i.e. to set a local Alpine meet once a month or so in a pub - Do I flag this as an idea on the Meeting Forum or contact the individuals directly? Is anyone else doing this and I am looking at wrong area of the web site?

Now the can you help techy bit? I am reasonably handy with a wrench but you have all been there before?

1 First job, check all the plugs... that was a fun way to spend an hour or two!...I'll get quicker once I've bought some 8" nose pliers...however, I couldn't find any ref to a plug gap in the hand book or engine manual.. Whats the gap supposed to be, these looked c. 0.80mm...

2 I knew the rear brakes were binding when I bought her and the first dry weekend I discovered the nearside H/Brake cable was beyond hope...... I had fun discovering the brake units seem to be from the front of a BX ? Am I right? Also fun trying to push the piston back.. yes I know now how its works.... Thanks Dad who owned a BX and has a good memory!
Q: Having cut the cable end off and drillled out the locating MS sheath from the Alloy housing of the calpier (what a botch)I now need to find a replacement cable... I am beting its a Citreon BX Cable also am i right?

3 One other problem thats gone away I hope.... after leaving the car hot after say for 15 mins the damn thing spins over but won't start.... the clean up of the plugs might have helped plus the download of the manual from your site suggests foot to the floor on a hot engine and so far things are better in this department...anything else I should look at?

Well thats as far as i have got and yes windows don't go down on one side and yes the heated rear window doesn't work, on the plus side my fuel guage seems OK touch wood!........Thansk for the tip on switch illumination... 97p and I can see my elec window switch in the dark (not that it does anything when I press it!)

If you want to post this on a forum, pls do so... I guess I'll get stuck in
to doing this when I feel less like the new boy!

Motoring just got fun again...

Pls see my Emerald Green - Original Spec Colour G plated GTA Turbo.. this is the car featured in 1990 what car against a 300ZX I believe ....

Look forward to meeting up some day...

Dont be shy Peter...join and start posting for real...its free! As for your hot start problem......you havent specified wether youve got a Turbo or atmo...it will make a difference on a problem like this. Electris windows are nearly always dodgy on GTAs.....my drivers side is all new and is still as slow as a snail. Have you checked the plug connections on the heated rear window? Mine didnt work when I got it and it was really that simple....the connectors had come unplugged.

Peter's car is a turbo. He's the proud new owner of Omar's emerald green GTA with the full beige leather.

Hi Peter,
I live in Cheltenham, not far from you. I'd be interested in attending a local meet - there is a monthly meet in the London area but it's a bit far for us to go. How about something like a weekday evening meet at a pub like The Highwayman on the main A417 between Cirencester and Cheltenham, which has a huge car park (usually empty - not a good sign!). Anyone else in our area interested?

Clive,
I'd be up for that - albeit my GTA is off the road at mo. I'm in Corsham.

:D Thanks Stephen for your reply to my email and posting my ramblings... and PeterG for suggestions. Clive/Stuart - I like the idea of the Highwayman, at least for a start, if we don't like it we can always move somewhere else next time around.... How about a kick off meet middle of next week? Gives us a chance to round up a few more locals?
If you guys want to get in touch by phone try my home at a decent hour! If I am not there leave a message and I'll call you back....

How about we meet at the Highwayman Inn, which is on the main A417, about half way between Cirencester and Cheltenham, at say 8.00pm on Wednesday 18th May?
Unfortunately I'm doing some running repairs on my car (1988 red atmo) this weekend so it may not be running next week! But if I can't use the car I'll come on my motorbike.
I'll post something in the meetings section as well.
