21 quadra turbo engine fire

this weekend gets worse, i lent paul my 21 to get home after the meeting and he was almost there when the engine bay went up in flames. paul is ok and i've told him not to worry about the car im just glad he was'nt hurt,

I feel totaly gutted, it was sods law it had to happen when you lent me the car. It happened so fas,t just as i was coming off the slip road, flames shot up the widscreen and smoke came in through the vents, I s**t myself and pulled over the hard shoulder and called 999 as i didn't have any water to put it out. I had been in the car 2 hours running fine and I was 5 mins from my door when it happened.
The fire man thought it must have been a fuel line due to how fast it went up, but I cant be sure as it looked pretty bad in the engine bay, it was totally burnt out.
The worst thing for me was the phone call to Andy who was kind enough to lend me his car, I felt gutted telling him it had caught on fire!!! Nobodys fault just one of those things, I am fine and andy was very good about it, only worring if I was ok. Andy you are a gent! To add insult to injury my car has been a pain in the backside too, really sorry about that, I will sort you out some extra for all the messing about.

I fear it will be written of as mine was (Cat B) but it depends if you want to save it or not. If you do the 21 TOC wil be a good source of bits.

Thankfully Paul was OK which is all that matters really.

Heck that's terrible news... can't imagine having to watch it... Hope you can salvage it Andy. How long was that after we peeled off Paul? Glad you're ok.

It happens all the while especially to phase2/3 cars Quadra inclusive, Renault recently recalled the cars to have the pipe replaced, I kept my original phase 1 pipe thanks. I know people from 21TOC who fitted new hoses because they had seen other owners car go up in smoke. One owner fitted a new hose and the new hoses were faulty and it split straight away (hence the recall (finally)). Some owners have had their own hoses made up and fitted as they no longer trust the Renault item.

Clee Phildini you may be wise to check your hoses or have a custom hose made up.

It was a fair while down the road about an hour after you guys turned off. It was on the slip road into gloucester off the A417.

I would recommend people check the oil feed hoses to the turbo after speaking to some of the guys as it seems to be common on older renault's with a turbo, also I am now getting a fire extinguisher for the 610 as I felt helpless with nothing to put out the fire.

Is the pipe in question the small one I think it leads to the top of the turbo, or the bigger metal one that goes under ( return feed ) the turbo. Checked the pipes today one looks brand new but the one that returns the oil looks a little worn.

Nah not really .....It's the main flexable return pipe from the bottom of the turbo down to the base of the block, the feed pipes tend to be ok but I have seen people fit their own custom braded high pressure feeds and returns.

Clee if your car has not already had this done, being a Faze 2, I would be very aware especially if your Mrs and kids use the car.

I know of a 13,2 second 21 that the pipe burst and he span at over 110mph .....he span on his own oil as he tried to break as quickly as possible to pullover so he could put the fire out.

The owner said there was 20 foot of flames coming out from under the rear of the car at that speed all the brakes and clutch equipement melting with the heat

if in doubt...... change it..... or risk bar be que init!

you could call a renault dealer and they should be able to check if it's had the recall done.....

My pipe didn't burst or split, it failed at the union under I guess extreme pressure. I'm really not sure whether to go with Renault's verdict on the pipe after recall or go with your own pipe made by an independant. It's your call I guess...
