Fuel flow meter A610

Postby jb644 » Thu Dec 30, 2010 4:45 pm

Does anyone know where the fuel flow meter is located. Having a few problems with the fuel computer and have completed the diagnostic test as per the manual and the first problem has flagged up the flow meter at fault.

Basically after a few miles, the fuel display starts flashing, well some of it does.

Gallons left - flashes
Range to empty - flashes
MPG - flashes
MPH - static
Distance travelled since reset - static

Any ideas?

It is located in the fuel tank infront of where you fill it up. You need to take the black cover off the fuel tank by undoing the philips screws also need to remove the spare wheel etc.
I did mine in the summer and resoldered the joints at the top and gave the wire rods a good clean. The fuel gage is spot on now.

Have you tryed the reset yet? Hold it down for a good while 5 mins if i remember right (the button with the star on) .

Paul, are you talking about the fuel flow meter or the fuel sender unit?

I have tried the reset and fault diagnosis by isolating the battery and turning back on.

Jason, Can you tell me what the reading is between the falshing, of the MPG?
Also, if the 610 is the same as the GTA Turbo, the fuel flow data is derived from the ECU........Do you know if it has the original ECU, or an after market one?
Another thing, after a reset, it thake about 10 miles of running before it starts flashing if there is a fault......Did the computer work for longer than that when you picked up the 610, or has it had the fault for some time, ie, did the previous owner say there was a fault with it?
Sorry for all the questions, but a process of elimination is whats wanted here

That is where the fuel sender is located, but mine did the same as yours till it showed empty all the time. Make sure there is plenty of fuel, turn the batterie isolator off and hold the reset button on the dash for 5 or 10 mins and turn the isolator back on and it should jump back into life, this is what I did and it stopped the flashing!

Paul, I don`t know where you got this info from, but I consider 5 to 10 mins OTT,...an owner could fall asleep doing this    . The book says 10 seconds, but I always hold it for a good 20 secs.......unless you have some info that says different, that should be sufficient to discharge the capicators and reset the processor

As far as I know the ecu is standard.

The flashing MPG figure reads 80.

It does probably take about 10 miles after a normal reset before it starts flashing.

The previous owner did tell me about the problem but as the fuel left seems right, he did n't bother with it.

Hope this helps.

Yes, if you read my post recently about using the MPG to determine where the fault lies, then here is an example. With a figure that high the computer sees no fuel being used, but milage mounting up....the figure will go up to 99.9 mpg eventually.
I take it that even though the display is flashing, the fuel gauge should still be reading accuratly?
I will have a check around to see if I can find where the actual flow info is coming from and what path it takes

John, had a look in the manual earlier, I was expecting to see some sort of flow meter in the fuel system diagram, but it did n't.

The fuel computer must be getting a signal from some sort of meter?

Jason, the Atmo has an actual Flow Meter, but the Turbo does not have one, I understand the ECU in the Turbo knows exactally how much fuel is being delivered to the injectors, so it outputs pulses to the computer proportional to the fuel being used in real time..... so no need for a Flow meter as such. Hope this makes sense

Jason, it looks like the flow data leaves the ECU from pin 26 according to the wiring diagram, this is the only output from the ECU to go to the computer. Speed and fuel level info will be coming from elsewhere, so I suspect this is where it comes from.
What I would do though is, with the battery disconnected, unplug the connector from th ECU (between the rear seats) inspect the pins for damage or corrosion, spray the plug and socket with switch cleaner/lubricant (electrolube or similar) reconnect making sure it is correctly seated, reconnect battery, hold reset button for a good 20 secs, switch on, push reset once more ( just a push), and give it a try. It may of may not fix the fault, but won`t do any harm......and there always a chance of a fix

Thanks.

I had this problem on Merlin. It turned out to be the Superchips ecu which I fitted. Check your new 610 has not been chipped by removing the cover between the rear seats.

If not do as JohnC suggests and clean the contacts.

Failing that could it be the relay fitted to later GTA's JohnC?

Martin, if you are talking about the TSU`s timer relay....that will only have an effect on the fuel level gauge, although if it fails...flashing will occur, as it will for any failure of the signals to the computer. However, as I understand it, Jason`s fuel gauge is accurate even though it might be flashing, so that relay will have no effect on his problem
