First breakdown...

Postby mogster242 » Fri Dec 17, 2010 12:24 am

Hi all,

just went to the shop earlier to get a bottle of milk... thought i'd take the gta for a spin :) started first thing, went to the shop and on the way back stopped at the traffic light and then nothing... :( engine stalled and impossible to start again... and man its cold tonight... wonder if that has anything to do with it? seems to me that its a fuel problem? battery ok. when i try to start it tries but cant quite make it like when you run out of petrol. obviously checked the petrol tank and there is about half in there... could not check anything since i did not have the manual with me and still dont know the car much since i have had it a week... note for later leave the manual in the car... had to get one of my mates to tow me home

my wife was certainly not impressed (to say the least) that it took me 1.5hrs to get milk etc

also this week (which may be linked???)... drove down from north wales 300 miles on one tank and there was still some in the tank. i was really happy and impressed. i filled up and reset the trip computer to see how much it will use... the speedo has been a bit temperamental but i seem to understand from what i have read in this forum that its something i should get used to. drove around town and on the final bit looked at the trip computer... man was i shocked!!! 0.5mpg  the gallons where going down like seconds...i had done 6 miles half the tank had gone 9.5 gallons), and i apparently had 7miles to go... panicked a little bit but when i got home, i checked the tank and there it was still almost full. i restarted the engine and the level went back up again. since i drove about 20 miles in town and have used half the tank and it tells me there is 12 miles left... is this normal?

any ideas on where to start? many thanks in advance.

Dismatle and clean up the petrol sender, pretty easy job.
Search the site for others experiences too.
Mine started to get stuck around the 6 gallon mark, then it would drop to 1 gallon about 120 miles later. After removal, a clean up and putting it back together it has been perfect again.

You wife will just have to get used to your new hobby.
Better you spend 90 minutes on your car than spending 90 minutes on another woman :-) The purr and burble of a V6 can be pretty good.

Doesn't really matter what the mpg is if it's not working

Check for spark ,power at the ignition module , TDC sensor , pumps priming and also earths ....That's about it .
After that ECU fault is all that is left .

There is no need to be sarcastic Lee, if you read Cedrics post correctly, you would have noticed there were two parts to it,....and I was mearly responding to his second querie. Sorry if that offended you.
I will leave the first part of his querie to you experts.

Cedric, stick it into diagnostic mode, you'll then avoid the spurious tank readings; it will show what you have in the tank from the sender and not a calculated reading.

Hi all

just to say that after all this time the GTA is now back on the road...all this for 1 little cable which had snapped at the connector...

it has taken me a while but between the snow, rain, cold, stuck doors and my little monster girl etc... i got there in the end...

i think i'm going to go for a nice drive tomorrow :D
