GTA Turbo Non-Starter - Urgent help required

Postby rbulkley » Sat Sep 18, 2010 4:23 pm

I need help with my 1986 GTA Turbo.

The car has been a perfect starter until I didn't use it for 3 weeks whilst working on it.

I believe my problem is electrical as I cannot get a spark and I can smell fuel when I remove a spark plug and turn the engine over.

So far I have checked the following:

1) Battery condition
2) Fuel and ignition relays click when the key is turned
3) The dashboard engine check light comes on and then goes out when the engine is cranked
4) I get 12V at the ignition module
5) No spark when 1 plug removed and engine cranked

The only connector I disturbed when working on the car was the crank sensor (red/white wire 2-pin connector close to the oil filler). I have since checked this connection and it all seems fine.

I was planning to take this car on a trip on Monday so all help would be appreciated!

Suggest better give us some clues as to work you were doing, what areas and how - twiddling, fiddling etc... rather sounds like something being disturbed, broken, knocked, flopped, dropped...

But the TDC sensor would and can give you all sorts of grief. Check the Misfire thread and search on TDC sensor.

Is the TDC sensor still on the original plug and socket ? If not then have you wired it red to red and white to white ? If so swap them over

Problem resolved

Postby rbulkley » Sat Sep 18, 2010 5:05 pm

Clee,
You're a genius and much smarter than Renault's electronic engineers.

My TDC sensor plug was indeed broken (I have a replacement AMP connector but have yet to fit it). I had used the right-side of my brain and basic logic and connected the wires white to white, red to red.

Once the wires reversed the engine started instantly and ran perfectly again!

So why did Renault's electronic engineers reverse the wire colouring within the connector?

Thanks for all you help, Richard

The sensor was made by an outside firm and supplied to Renault. Alpine, when they made the wiring harness for the car crossed the wires, so we ended up with a mismatch. This is not a problem providing the original wiring harness and the sensor are plugged in together, but unfortunately when we all tidy up the wiring in the engine bay out logic kicks in and we automatically connect red to red and white to white! All turbo cars from the first to the last have this wiring fault. (my car was off the road for four months due to this problem. Renault failed to identify the problem but talking to another member had it sorted in 2 minutes) That was 12 years ago and the car has run perfectly since.
