Help needed to remove handbrake cable

I am in need of getting my rear caliper replaced and I need to get the handbrake cable off the old one, firstly so that I can reuse the cable, and secondly so that I can return the old caliper for refurbishment.

There is a 1 inch steel sleeve stuck in the lug of the caliper.

I have soaked it in penetrating oil,
I have tried loads of gentle taps,
as well as some mightly 2LB club hammer ones.
I also tried a bit of heat, maybe I'll try that again with a load more..... but I dont want to fry or melt the cable rubber or plastic inner liner.

I made up an insert to go inside the end that needs to be tapped out, the white one,
and I also made up a sleeve to rest on the lug of the caliper to seat it.

Currently I have an OHC valve compresser round it all applying pressure, while it soaks in oil too.

ANY help or suggestions much appreciated.

i had to cut both my hand break cables to get my calipers referbed. just like you i tried everything to get them out with no success. hacksaw , new cables,£70 quid and the dam things were about an inch too short. had to leave the D shape cable carrier out for a while to strech the cables and let the new referbed calipers and pads bed in . after a few weeks use the cables did reach a bit closer to the handbreak but were still a bit short.ended up having to drill a new hole in the D shaped cable carrier so the fixing pin would line up. all rear breaks are now spot on.
think you might have to open the wallet and bite the bullet.

I agree, cut the cable! Saves time pi$$ing around. If you also find that your new cables are too short then I also sell longer handbrake cable adjusters, exactly as per original.....just longer!

My handbrake lever is 2.5cm from the centre of the pivotpoint to the centerline of where the cable would be.
Does this count as a short arm?
If I upgraded to longer arms, what sort of length are the arms and what real advantaged would I see?

The guys that did my calliper had to cut the cable to get it out - it jamming in sounds like a very common problem. They got a replacement cable from Renault (I guess) and didn't report any problems. I'd assumed that that would replace both sides but they managed to get a cable that just did the driver's side.

Simon,

I've previously posted on this subject as I had the same problem a few years ago.

I ended up using a junior hacksaw to cut a groove in the top of the lug (along the direction of the cable), applied Lusol/Plusgas, and prised the groove open slightly with a screwdriver to ease the tension of the lug on the steel sleeve. It freed of quite easily using a twisting action with a pair of mole grips. I trust this helps.

Stuart, I am hoping to free it without any destructive action..... because I get £35 cash back for the exchange unit.
Actually the loss of exchange might be cheaper than a new handbrake cable.

Any other ideas folks, I'm trying to conserve my usage of new parts.

I have secondhand cables if you want one of those ? They will do the job as they came out with just a little wiggle :lol:
Cut the cable off and send it as is for exchange .I'm sure they'll accept it as they'll just get some big heat on it .
Let me know what side .
