Heater fan issues - continued...

Postby Paul Taylor » Sat Feb 06, 2010 5:04 pm

Hi all,

I have read all the previous threads on the interior fan problems, so i am aware of most of the issues and related fixes.
But something else appears to be happening with mine.

I only have Max fan speed, and nothing else.
Swapped the Fan switch, and that made no difference.
So i bridged the fan switch supply wire "yellow", with each of the white fan speed wires in turn. Only the max speed worked. So i believe this points to the Resistor which is inside the fan duct near the motor ?.
( I have ordered this from renault. £18 ).

While i have been driving the car this week, i get what sounds like a leaf stuck in the ducting somewhere, or touching the fan.
That is until i noticed the sound stopped when i operated the elec windows.
As soon as i let go of the Window switch the noise starts again.
Investigating today, it appeared this sound was comming from the Radio area, so i have pulled all the Radio and assiciated wiring.
I have now confirmed the noise is indeed a relay that is in the far back lower right hand corner, behind the radio.

Anyone know what this relay is ?.

Thanks !.

PS: The GTA has been through a deep cleaning process. The interior carpets have all been removed and washed 3 times. They now look superb !. Leather seats have been treated with "Gliptone Liquid Leather".
All the dasn and plastics have been cleaned to look like new.
I have also fitted the factory rear decals "thanks to ART", so now people know what it is !.
Happy days so far, and loving my GTA ownership !.

Ahhh now then .

# 20 Electric fan failure relay .

Not sure if that refers to the heater fan or the engine bay fans ( suspect it is these ) but got to be worth a look .

I haven't got those bits you were after ,sorry .

Here is one to throw into the mix ......
My car does not use this resistor unit .It has another type of controller as used on the 21T.
I suspect this is a one off mod from when it was A/C .

Image

You can see the resistor in the duct but this is not wired in .It is the big 'Spring' thing that controls speed .It has 4 speeds ,the lowest being on with ignition and then 3 more .

Thanks for the reply Lee.

The resistor still has not arrived in my local dealership, since its on order direct from France.
But by the looks of it, that open copper coil type you have would probably work.

On the noisy relay front. I have been installing a new sound system today, so i removed all the relays that were behind the radio.
2 Large ones on the very bottom, and one smaller relay on the rear right side. I popped the covers off the relays and gave the contacts a good spray with Contact Switch cleaner. Allowed to dry, and re-assemble.
No more relay noise !. Result.
(The contacts inside the relays were very dirty from years of use.).

Apologies - slightly off-topic, Paul, but I noticed that you said you've washed the carpets 3 times.
As it sounds like it worked a treat, how did you wash them? Carpet cleaner or washing machine :) ?

Thanks

Hi John,

We have one of these...
http://www.bisselldirect.co.uk/product/1085

It has a small cleaning head attachment that is only 3.5" wide. So its absolutely ideal for the small size of the GTA.

This is the cleaning fluid i used.
http://www.bisselldirect.co.uk/product/8

And yes the carpets came out superb. To be quite frank, they were in a terrible state. Very very dirty, and full of 20+ yrs of dirt. Smelly too.
But after 3 washes, and plenty of rinsing i got them pretty much as new. Basically i kept at it until the fluid coming back out the carpet was clean.
Took me about 4hrs. But well worth it.

Along with my other Alpine jobs today, i also fitted a brand new Ballast Resistor into the heater fan.
Man that was fun.........I got the fan unit out OK, but getting it back in was a whole different story.

Anyway the original resistor looked ok. No sign of burning or damage.
But replaced with the new one, and now i have ALL fan speeds.
Woohoooo.

Another good job done...

Update on the Ballast Resistor for the heater fan.

Mine died again last week.
I smelt a burning smell while driving one morning, and then the fan went off. Only to work on max speed again. And this was a new unit from Renault. Well 6 months old.

Anyway, i was recomended to use this guy by another car forum. >
http://www.blower-motor-resistor.co.uk/

I sent my resisitor to him, and he replaced it with a better type of resistor that also incorpoates a Heat-Sink.
Cost £13.50 total, inc postage.

Now i have my fan back on all 4 speeds again.

The green resistor thing is knacked in mine too - judging by the melted fuse way on the fuse board... and the burnt connector on the 4 pin block on top of the fan ducting..

I take it you were happy with the recon unit from that web site then Paul? If so I'll order one.

Has anyone ever tried anything from another car manufacturer to control the fan speed?
