Gear choice is irrelevant.The D does not put as much heat or stress into the system .
Gear selection into reverse is absolutely relevant because it's the only gear that isn't synchro'd. The synchro will take up the "drag" of a clutch that isn't disengaging properly in any of the forward gears.

He said he sees no evidence of the slave cylinder leaking. Ispo Facto in my experience the slave ain't the problem. (the fluid in it might be, has it been bled recenelty?)
