The two sensors are temp rated ,I can't recall of the top of my head which is which but they are marked temp wise .

Great stuff, Lee, thanks. Should be easy to tell which sensor is which.
How about the wiring? I can't remember off the top of my head whether the 4 connectors have different coloured wires but I expect they do.

Just a note for the GTA turbo guy`s, there appears to be two conditions that will bring on the Engin Bay Warning Light, according to the manual.
One....is the Overheating of the Engin Bay, and Two,....if one of the two fan motors is cut off, or short circuits.
I dont think this applies to the 610 though, but someone can confirm this, I am sure.

It appears that it depends on the year of the GTA, possibly pre 1990, and post 1990 or thereabouts. On the pre 1990, the top thermo switch should be the 110` one, with one Black lead (earth) the other being a Brown lead with a Yellow tracer, The lower one should be the 90` one, with two Black leads attached, one of them being an earth.
The post 1990 ones, the manual is not as clear, as their positions are not identified as 110` or 90`, but I would assume that the top one is also the 110` switch (which only operates the warning light), also all four wires are Black, which does not help very much :cry:

They are supposed to have a temp sender for oil as well but I've never seen one fitted .
Oil sender is 60deg ,then the two air @ 90 & 110 .
They should also operate at either 6 or 12 volts depending on temp and switched ignition or not .There is also a extra warning diode for Turbo models to indicate fan failure/overheat 110+ .

It's all listed in the GTA manual C-49 thro C-51 .But that has the oil temp involved .......

I can't remember exactly at present how mine is set up .I have taken the sensors and fans out but do use the wiring to run other fans via a switch that I've installed .I do know that when I throw the switch the new fans run and the dash warning light comes on .....

You could just short the wiring and see what each pair do .

Yes, I was having a good look at that last night before I posted about the wire colours. Shame there's nothing about the colours of the wires on those - thanks to JohnC for the info, though!

I can't say that I've seen a sender on the sump for the 60deg, either. I assume the one near the oil cooler is oil pressure (or is it?) and I think there's one near the dipstick that I assumed was the oil level sender (which rarely works for me - only when the battery is about dead, strangely - and as the speedo whips round to 170mph! Bad earths by the sound or perhaps the way the immobiliser was installed...)

You could just short the wiring and see what each pair do .

That's true. I got the impression (from the manual) that the fans just get faster when the 90deg sender activates?

I must get joined up, you're right. Still can't see that top-tip of how to get to the speedo connector via the dashboard air-vent. I took the dashboard apart last time. :lol:
Perhaps I'll get the membership sorted out when my Samco auxilliary coolant hose kit arrives to celebrate! :wink:

Martin, Getting back to your original posting, before it was hijacked by the GTA turbo boys, :lol: :lol: :lol:. I see that on the 610, the rear fans operation is much simpler than the GTA ones. There are no relays, no two speed complications, both fans are wired in parallel, and operate together via the one 90` thermo switch. which has a White wire feeding it, (with a Black earth). The 120` Thermo switch, like the GTA, only operates the warning light, and has a Blue wire feeding it, also together with a Black earth. I suspect, although not 100% sure, that the 120` switch will be in the same position as the GTA one,ie:- the top one. The fans are fed directly from the battery, but the warning light is ign controlled.
If the switch wiring is correct, I would check the off side fan to see if it is fully functional, as that one cools the turbo via the ducting on the underside of the engin cover. If it is not blasting much air or has siezed, or the fan ducting is not mating properly with the engin cover, I would expect the warning light to come on. It is interesting to note that both John and Lee`s 610`s do not seem to get this problem (assuming the light cct is working on their`s that is :lol: )
Anyway for what its worth here is the cct for the 610 :wink:

Thanks for all the replies, I'll check them out when I get back up north.

The fans don't seem to come as as frequently as on my GTA from memory. They are both working though. I'll check out your info JohnC Cheers :D

OK I have had time to have a quick look...

The top wires on the top sensor (both thick wires one black one white) turn the fans on and they both work perfectly.

The bottom two wires (thinner blue and a black wire) turn on the hot engine bay warning light on the dash with the ignition turned on.

The top sensor looks fairly new (maybe someone has been here before) and has the part no 60 01 008 967 which from the parts book looks the correct one for that position. Could not see the bottom sensors part no but with the light coming on I assume it's correct and operational.

So are these the wrong way around? Could any 610 owners check if the top sensor has the wires for the sensor (blue and white) and the bottom sensor the wires (white and black ) please?

It makes sense to me that the bottom sensor will get hotter first - but then I don't think they're rated to the same temp.

You know the light sensor works, try swapping the wires - that way the fans will come on when the light used to.

Did your fans actually ever come on before?

The part No. for the top one is for the 110` sensor, and in the correct position, and therefore when those wires are shorted, the light should illuminate. If I read you correctly, those wires bring on the fan, so I would suggest the wires to the two sensors have been invertantly reversed.

Yes....I would be inclined to swap them over and when driving make sure the fans come on before the light does, but I suspect you wont see the light again unless there is actual overheating :wink:

Just rereading this on the preview, it all makes sense, the two thick wires will carry more current for the fans, and therefore should be on the 90` bottom sensor, the two thinner wires which only carry the current for the light, and should be on the 110` top sensor.
Seems a though Stunned Monkey has had the same problem as you have :cry:

All I would add to that is on my revised layout the light comes on when I switch the switch I have linked to the FAT wires ....GTA mind .
I think this is what occurs .... the fans come on and the engine bay fan light illuminates .If it gets above 110 then the STOP light on the dash will light up to indicate fan failure/overheat .

Which light are you seeing come on BIG ? The bay fan or the STOP ?

As you know Lee, I have not seen or worked on the turbo GTA, but from the manual it appears that the warning light should not come on when the fans are running by themselves, however when either:-
1. The 110` thermo switch comes on indicating overheating in the engin bay, or:-
2. A fan fails or short circuits,
...then both the warning light and the stop light will illuminate.
It is worth noting that the fan circuit is quite different between the 610 and the GTA turbo.
