Lee I'm guessing by rear bearing you mean wheel bearing?

Check it's fully tightened up. There was a tech note from Alpine about them - the main nut can lose some of its torque and gives the appearance of a loose hub like a bearing that's on it's last days.

My GTA failed its MOT years ago on exactly that. Spoke to Paul Sage and he suggested the above. Went into the local Renault centre in Crawley at the time and asked them to have a look. I had a big argument with the service manager who claimed it was totally impossible for this to happen and then claimed they were too busy to look at the car, basically as he would only consider it if they were swapping the bearing out.

Anyway went down the local tyre place I always used to use and they slackened it off, and then re-tightened - good as new. Passed the re-test on the MOT the next day.

Total cost nothing. No thanks to Renault service as usual

Anyway might be that, might not. Just a thought.

Had a DeLorean with squirrelly handling recently - same thing, same effect.

That is a very good tip Darren.......I wonder if anyone has a copy of the tech note, I would like a copy for future reference

Paul Sage told me it was a tech note but I've not seen it. I do remember he told me the advise was to use a locking compound on the thread to stop this happening.

I think the big central nut is nylock, so in theory meant to stop this but it's the large heavy wheels and the torque reaction of acceleration and braking that seems to ease them loose, so this was Alpine's fix.

Darren, I note that Lee`s loose nut was the on the offside wheel, I suspect yours was as well, as I also suspect that as both hub nuts are RH threaded, then this loosening will only occure on one side due to forward rotation. Can you confirm that your offside wheel was the one effected.
Notwithstanding that, clearly both hub nuts should be checked, but it would be interesting to know if yours was the same as Lee`s

It's a long time ago now (probably 12+ years) so I can't say for sure but I'm pretty sure it was nearside..... I'd check both if you're ever worried.

Jack the car up and wiggle the wheel from side to side (just remember not to put on the handbrake) - easy to spot the play in it if it's loose. It also sometimes seems to manifest itself with the brake rubbing slightly on one side during low speed corners. It happened to me twice, once with the MOT and once with the brake rubbing that caused me to spot it.

I've got a gravel driveway so it was possible to check for play without jacking the car up, as you can still feel the wheel move from side to side if you give it enough of a heft. (On tarmac you'd have to jack it up as there's too much stiction to the ground)

Key thing is that if it's a worn bearing it'll almost certainly be noisy and you'll hear it as you drive. If it's a loose hub nut you won't, so if it fails an MOT and you've not heard rumbling from the bearings then I'd try this first.

Just to complicate matters though I was convinced at one point that the rear bearings had gone again but it was just that the tyres were down to the minimum tread. Replaced the tyres and the noise stopped.
