Tappet Question - GTA Turbo.

Hi all,

Went to see a GTA Turbo today, but one or possibly two of the tappets were very noisy. Even when the engine was hot after 30mins.

Are the tappets on the 2.5 adjustable ?.
I remember from my days of working on the 2664cc engine, That the tappets were adjustable.
I also remember that the tappet rocker has a small pin hole on the underside that sprays oil onto the cam. This tiny hole was prone to blocking.
Is this still an issue on the 2.5 ?.

Yes they are adjustable, a bit fiddly but not a hard job apparently.

Which one did you go to see? Get it bought before the froggies buy all our GTA's :shock: I've now had 3 french guys ring/email me wanting to buy the blue one.

Well i have another one to see tomorrow in Bristol.

Its a red 88 GTA Turbo. The rear subframes and suspension were all removed last yr, and black powder coated.
Its also a very good price.

The one i saw today was the silver one, as pictured in the other thread.
Exterior of the car is in great condition. But it needs an interior spring clean and some electrical niggles fixed. Nothing major.

Got to say, they are an amazing drive !. The steering is so precise and accurate. It actually felt just like my old Pontiac Fiero GT 2.8 V6i. Just with alot more power !.
I was also surprised how quiet they are, the V6 is very tame, and well mannored during normal driving. Where as the Pontiac engine was louder than hell. It was like a F1 engine right behind your head.

Im definately taken now... My thoughts of a 4th Gen Camaro Z28 5.7 LT1, have dropped off the radar :lol:

LOL, yeh thats the one.
Bit of a funny ad i must admit.

But the pictures of the car are stunning, and the inside still looks like new.
A visit and test drive will tell a clearer story.

Tappets are certainly adjustable, but rarely get done from what I have seen. On the turbo, LH tappet cover comes off in ten minutes, the RH an hour. The job isn't difficult, just getting to the job is the hard part.

The Red one near Bristol is not to be.

The bodywork is horrendous (sp).
The paintwork is covered in blisters and pealing Laquer. It really is a terrible state. So would require a full respray.
However mechanically the car is sound, and has a clean tidy interior.

The search continues.............

He seems a nice genuine chap, and the car itself is good.
But im guessing a full good quality respray on a Enduraflex body is going to be around £2k ?.

Its just a personal preference.. I would rather just buy a car that is right in the first place. Rather than buy it, and throw a wad of cash at it.

A decent respray would cost a lot more than £2k unless of course you got our resident painter (Andy001) to do the job. He would do a top notch job for a very reasonable price. :wink:

From what I have seen over the years, finding an Alpine that doesn't need a respray is a real challenge (it would either never have been out of the garage or already had one recently). Paintwork is not their forte!! At least the bodywork doesn't rust though (even though the underneath certainly does!)

Mint/restored cars a few and far between. Your just not going to find a 20 year old plastic french sports car in showroom condition for under £5k.

So your going to have to raise your budget if you want a minter as they fetch £7-8k. Or buy one for around £4k and spend 2-3k on it.

If an atmo is ok with you then give Kevin a ring on 01142749677 he has a very tidy car for sale monarco blue leather seats air con Azef wheels a new clutch has just been fitted and sub frame only £4500 to you or near offer the car lives in Sheffield
