Still Working on the RED-SHED GTA V6 Turbo.

Postby redodare » Sat Oct 10, 2009 10:23 am

Having dropped the Engine /Gearbox from the car which is sitting on my driveway, dragged it into the garage, I want to split it into 2 or 3 parts to refurb ie clean and paint subframe etc. I also suspect a clutch problem.
Thinking about this and replacing the assembly into the car, I am thinking refit subframe and g/box from underneath and engine thru the hatch.
Looking at the overall wgts I wondered if a 500 KG engine lift would do the job?
A lift would also make it easier to split the engine gearbox and subframe.
Any thoughts from DIY mechanics?
One of these days I am hoping to start putting thing back instead of always taking it apart !!

A half ton crane will be fine .
You might as well throw the whole lot back in as a whole from underneath You will double the pain in the asp jobs doing it both ways .

I have had mine out twice, just like Lee, from the underneath.
It just wheels out from under the car, and any bits you are not working on can easily be stored under the car.

Still working on the RED-SHED

Thanks for that info. The complete assy is on the garage floor so you have convinced me to put it back the same way as it came out.
The only problem is getting enough height. Thanks for the picture ( a1000 words etc) Looks like I need a dolly and those side stands. Is that a 2 x 4 supporting the Chassis cross member at the side lifting points?
It also looks like the turbo is also in situ?
Looks like a good call.
Regards
Colin.

What ever way you get it out, it will go back in the same way.
You just need the beam, the blocks and you can get away with 1 jack, but 2 is a lot easier.
My beam happens to be a 6 by 3, its what I had around.
Yes, you can leave the turbo in situ.

Errrrr, and no the front spoiler does not touch the ground.
When the bootom of the bacck bumper is 100cm clear of the ground, the engine on trolley will wheel out.

Good luck, and you will have fun.

Clee,
As you have had the whole engine out, can you enlighten me as to where the two coolant pipes that go to & from the oil exchanger disapear to ?

Mine are getting a bit rusty.

One connects to a pipe that goes up the back and feeds into both of the cylinder heads and the turbo if water cooled. The other up to the front and to the heater matrix .I have binned the oil cooler thingy and put a U-bend in to connect the two .
