Strange noises

Postby jules » Sat Apr 18, 2009 11:46 am

Been wondering why my GTA been sounding like a hoover for the past month, despite running like a dream. so i thought i'd try and video it and post it up here for some advice. Anyway, suddenly noticed  what appears to be a hole in the intercooler :?: If anyone has a few seconds can they check my video and see what they think

intercooler

Postby Miles » Sat Apr 18, 2009 11:54 am

Jules,
the part you are looking at is a cover.
Highly unlikely you would be able to hear an intercooler fault at tickover the airflow through it would be pretty minimal. As the turbo would not be pushing air.

Try removing the Alt/water pump drive belt, and run the engin for 30secs or so, and see if the noise disappears, sounds like the water pump to me, .....if noise goes....spin the water pump by hand to check.

Yes sounds like the water pump to me too. Took the belt off mine the other day and spun the water pump pulley by hand. It's knackered! Loads of play in the pulley and the bearings sound like gravel when you turn it.

Got a video of mine here but doesn't seem to be working at the moment for some reason. :?

noise identification

Postby Miles » Sat Apr 18, 2009 1:36 pm

Jules the best way to identify where a noise is coming from is to use a ..
flexible pipe to your ear and move it around the engine. This will help you pin point source.
Air line hose is ideal.

Jon / Jules - just a thought may be mutually beneficial, I have a turbo that Jon can borrow whilst he get's his hybrid repaired (had already offered it to help) - Jules do you fancy stisking it on for him, I'm sure you could come to some mutual agreement  . My junk & w/shop space is down in Sunbury and can do it there if needed.
