Ooops - sorry officer !

Got stopped by the police today having been followed for about 8 miles down the 505 and into Royston.

I knew they were there (I'd moved over so they could pull out of a side road) and I'd been watching the speedo' making sure I was sitting on 70. They told me I was doing 80 on the dual carraigeway I know speedo's have been the topic of conversation on previous posts but I didn't realise mine was inaccurate.

It would be good to have an idea of engine revs in 5th for 40, 50, 60 & 70mph for an atmo with standard wheels. Can anyone help?

The two guys who stopped me were really top blokes and understanding that it's an old car and said they knew I knew they were there. Even had a quick chat about the car before telling me to be careful as if they'd been traffic police they'd have been less lenient. Phew! Unblemished record and first time I've been stopped in 26 years of driving.

ATMOs and DeLoreans have the same gearing so this link should be of some use. Although the DeLorean's wheels are larger so you'll be on the safe side sticking to these:

You had a lucky escape there. I cant help with figures as we have a 40mph limit over here However it may be unwise to get figures from another Atmo`s speedo, as one would not know how accurate that speedo was. If I want accurate MPH against RMP, I would read them off my sat nav. It would be interesting to check them against Stunned Monkeys chart

I posted a thread recently regarding how accurate are your speedos. It's on page 2 of this particular part of the forum.
I found out that my speedo under read by 10%, which is very close to what yours is.

I have just looked out my 1990 Alpine sales brochure, and the definitive figures for the Atmo are given of speed in each gear in MPH per 1000 RPM :-

1st.............5.95 mph
2nd............9.72 mph
3rd...........14.50 mph
4th...........19.31 mph
5th,,,,......,24.40 mph
Reverse,..,,,5.64 mph

Decided, as an exercise, to do the figures (just to keep the brain ticking)

40 mph................1639 rpm
50 mph,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,2049 rpm
60 mph................2459 rpm
70 mph................2869 rpm
80 mph................3279 rpm

All the above rpm readings are for 5th gear.

I have the Turbo figures if anyone wants them. (I have KPH for both models as well)

First job is to check my rev counter against my multimeter - assuming it's OK I'll mark up the rev counter against JohnC's figures and hopefully not attract any more unwanted attention.
