GTA heated rear screen

The heated rear screen on my 1990 GTA no longer works. A wire than connects in to the area around the base of the gas struts has broken.

How can this be fixed? Does it require removal of the rear 3/4 perspex 'window'?

Also, the paint code for the car is 485. I cant see this shown on any list of GTA paints - its similar to Alpine Blue. Does anyone know what the colour is?

How has the wire broken? Has the tag that the wire spade end fits onto become broken away from the screen?
This has happened on mine, and where it is not practical to solder it back on, you can buy a silver epoxy compound adhesive with which you can re-attach it to the screen. The adhesive has a strong bond and is also conductive.

As Jeff suggests there is a metal glue available from Maplins I believe which can repair a broken connection for the rear screen (do a quick search on the site).

I think we need to establish exactally where the break is. Reference to the rear 3/4 window puzzeles me.
I suspect from your discription, it is at the bottom of the gas strut, where it disappears into the body work.
If this is the case, the diags below show where the wiring goes, I have posted both the Atmo & Turbo, I expect they are both the
same for your purposes, but it is a bit clearer in the Atmo diag.



The wire is connected to the strut via a female crimp connector, which can be replaced quite easily providing you can pull enough wire
up to crimp on a new connector.
If this is not the fault area, can you be a bit more specific

I've just had exactly this problem with mine.
I'd previously used the silver epoxy stuff - Frost Fighter - which I got from a supplier in the US off the net. Very good.

However, again the rear screen demister stopped working. I discovered that the wire that connects to the base of the gas strut and goes into the body at the rear quarter light on the passenger side had broken at the end of the original spade connector.

I just stripped the end of the broken wire and fitted a new female spade connector. Works very nicely now.

I did try to fit a new spade connector into the original plastic connector casing but although I could get the broken one out, I couldn't get the new one in (having removed it from its plastic casing), so gave up and ditched the original plastic connector.

Yes, the wire had come adrift from the base of the gas strut. I will look at replacing the female connector.
