Not sure on miles but there is a limit given in the manual on the tensioner movement .It's a fair amount of movement from memory 15mm ? I'll check .I don't think it's a real issue but worth replacing the chains ,tensioners and guides if you've got the engine in bits .
When I've put new chains on the tensioners are fully home so have that full movement available .The old lumps 80/100k that I've looked at still had loads of movement left in the tensioners ..

Had a look and it's 22mm max travel on the tensioner .This is relative to the gap between the root of the cam sprocket tooth and the chain which must not exceed 1.7 mm .

Remember a stretched chain = retarded cam timing. Martin Guard had one snap on his GTA turbo at 200k+ IIRC. That car was religiously serviced. Interestingly, no valves were bent.

Chains much cheaper from Volvo but you have to paint the marks on yourself

I do remember that we use to change the original chains on the R30 and early R25 every 70k, then the replacement ones were 120-130k.
Then again I know of two PRV units that have never had the chains checked or replaced in over 20yrs and well over 200k.

Thanks for all the info/help as normal-- Hi Clee- yes that's about what I thought...

seems they can last 200,000 or maybe 80,000 odd... anyway whatever that's alot better than a rubber belt that lasts 60,000!! Seems there is not really such an issue with Alpine's cam CHAIN- opposed to BELT.... that was kinda the question I was asking... :D
