Yes I can see what you are saying, but you have forgoten the maintanance side, Aston are bloody expensive!! and you can't really fix it in your own garage, like you can do with a ALPINE.... same goes for Jag...... maybe the BMW is the only car that would be possible to be maintain privately. There are also lots of cheap Ferrari out there too.

Ohh and not forgetting quantity surveyors ...........

Rupert - I thought you were a man of good taste!!!! Although at least if the building game gets really bad you'll be able to step straight into a hairdressing role.

The big interest rate cut is great news though and saves me a big chunk. It's also a great time to trade up whether it be a house or car as although you get less for yours you save even more if you buy bigger/better/newer.

There are some real bargains out there at the moment - especially on big engined cars around the 5 yr old mark - like the Cayenne's, 6 series beemers, XK8's, generally anything thats expensive to run. It's tempting to say the least. My trouble is I don't want to pay £400 a year to tax it and it's got to be at least 15 years old to go on my classic fleet policy. The choice doesn't look so fantastic then.

This week I've been checking out Mercedes 500 and 600 SL's and CL's. A tidy sensible mileage 1994 600 CL with Brabus 20" wheels went for £2700 on E-bay - £110,000 ish new! Very nice SL 60 AMG on there for £9500 up today no bids, again over £100k new. Nice 500SL's 2 a penny for 4-6k.

Personally I think your better off going for something with a nice big simple understressed engine and as few other parts to go wrong as possible - makes for a cheap car to fix. All the ridiculous non- essential stuff in modern cars is frightening. I had a top of the range Vel Satis for a while last year and can honestly say I hated certain aspects that are now deemed luxury essentials. Automatic lights and wipers, the worst sat nav I've ever used, confusing high fi,and worst of all the automatic handbrake.

Your right Tony those automatic handbrakes are the pits. My last 2 company smokers had them (Citroen C4 Picasso and a VW Passat Est). Hated them both, god knows what it would cost to put right when that goes wrong a few years down the line...

My current daily drive is a Nissan Qashqai (due to a delayed Vauxhall Insignia). It has a "proper" handbrake thank god!

I have been looking at that Ghibli for a while It's very tempting as I love the shape of them. There are loads of other bargains as discussed above, the used car market being on it's asp explains the dwindling Alpine values I suppose.

For someone looking for a GTA and has £3k to spend he should get a well looked after Turbo (Just like Rupert's), he then buys an autotrader and See's M3's, Impreza's, BMW Cabrio's, Big Mercs etc etc all for the same price or lower....Selling a GTA nowadays(took me 4 months last year to sell mine) I can only compare to trying to sell a house which has had a multiple murder carried out in it

Yep, you're right Martin, GTA's are worthless at the moment, and probably for a while yet. There are so many decent quality reliable sports cars around for so little money.

I think the turbo will have to get rolled to the back of the garage and just get dusted off every now and then, there is little point in selling it for at best £2500 I should think.

Now to start saving for the Z3M.... hairdresser's car eh, 325hp for £7K... Come on, it can't be that bad.

Though I think the boss wants a vaguely decent bathroom, some carpet in the house, also for the roof not to leak every time it rains heavily, and a couple of rotten windows replaced, and of course a kitchen....first, which is fair enough.
