Right on a mission today, changed my fuel comp sender and sorted that out as well! Still got this fuel smell and it does not make a journey a pleasant one at all.

After a few more checks I think I have found the problem, it was right under my nose all the time, literally!

"Sniffing" around the boot with the liner out I found the smell was at it's worst around the filling area. After looking across the top of the boot from the top of the wing crouched down I could see fuel vapour coming from the filler cap! Had a good look and it's got 2 holes drilled in it :?:  I'm sure this is not correct as there is already a breather which comes off the tank and under the car. I'll see if DG or SD have a good one or anyone else got one before I seal it with silicone? It's the early type larger cap not the small one with the A on it.

I've got the early type larger filler cap on my car and it certainly hasn't got any holes in it!

Hi chanced upon this, has anyone got a new seal for a smaller type cap (with the "A" on it)? Would you know where to get one?

My car used to stink of fuel when re-fueled , but only when I had passengers in the car . When the tank was removed to replace the front brake lines the smell dissapeared as has not re-appeared . Some fuel lines were replaced during the work . Strongly suggest the tank is taken out & hopefully all will be revealed .

Ok so had the boot liner out a couple of days ago, had a good look around, all the pipework seemed fine so i went around checking the seals. ALL of my jubilee clips needed tightening and i found that the petrol cap was not sealing either. Removed the O ring, put a good bit of instant gasket in it's place, neatened up and left to set. Replaced O ring.

Sorted, no fuel smell :D :D

I'll look forward to that then

All my clips could be tightened about 1-2 turns and that wasn't really going for it as i was worried i'd crack the rubber. Make sure the gasket gives the O ring a good even seat otherwise the smell may still appear!!!

Was stuck in some really heavy traffic on the way back from Bruntingthorpe, I got intoxicated prim and proper. This winter I am going to put the car on stands and strip the whole fuel system!!! my problem only gets bad once the car gets quite hot in traffic, I think it might start from under the car..... somewhere......

I'm sorry to admit that with low fuel my car also still smells! Strange that with a full tank it doesn't.....

The investigation goes on!!!

Just a note which may or may not help. On my Atmo without aircon, when the ign is switched on, the heater/ventilation fan starts to run on low speed. When you see where the intake to the air box is......just behind the fuel tank, and drawing air from around it...makes you wonder
I saw reference to this in a manual, and it was flagged up as a "Positive Ventilation Feature"

Yep and straight through the centre vents and into the cabin! Is there anyway to switch/block it off that still allows the normal cabin fan to work?

No, There is only one fan  If you block off the two center vents, the fan will blow the air (+ fumes) in via the other vents.
