Wanted GTA Fuel Sender Unit

Yes i know, not totally necessary but 545am today found myself coughing into Wandsworth BP- 75 ltrs in a 70 ltr tank she took :oops: :oops:

I was just about to say try Renault as I beleive they are down to around £50 at the moment according to turbodog?

How would I know the difference? if its anyhelp I think you have my chassis no but from memory she was registered 31-12-89 so probably the later type :D :D

Could you possibly have a look for me and let me know? Hand over @ Bruntingthorpe?

Jon, before you go any further with this, can you identify the one that is actually fitted in your Alp, the part number is easily seen on the end of the unit where the connections are. If it is the later type, this sensor can be easily be checked with a multimeter. There is another component required for the later sensor, the "tank sender unit" mounted between the sensor and the computer, and if that is faulty, again your gauge will not work. The TSU is mounted on the nearside wheel arch, under the boot tray. But identification of your unit is a must at the moment :wink:

The early type sender can be put into the tank anyway around and at varying heights.
The later type have a hole through the plastic top of the sender and a pin passes through this to make sure it is fitted in the correct loctation. This pin can be seen under the black rubber collar at the top of the tank.

I assume by "this unit", you mean the later type, as checked against the part number supplied by Stephen. If you are sure then checking is easy, but this will not work on the earlier type.
I go on the premis that you have a reasonably fueled up tank, you say you put 70 litres in yesterday. Just disconnect the tank sensor connector, and with a multimeter set to ohms, range 1 or 2k if not auto ranging, connect it across the two terminals of the sensor and you should get a reading somewhere between 300 to 400 ohms. The tolerance of this reading is, you will note, quite wide, this is normal, as renault give a + or - of 50 ohms at the top end of the sensor.
There is a further check, but so as not to confuse, do the above first and let me know what happens.

PS. Can you tell me exactly what your gauge shows at the moment, ie:- 0.0 or - - - or an actual figure or whatever?

On the later type sender at least, the ohms resistance reading will reduce as the tank empties unlike any other fuel sender I have worked on, which would normally have the least resistance when the tank is full to allow the greatest voltage to reach the gauge which in usual arrangements is a simple voltmeter.

Perhaps an inspection inside the sender might find a problem of why the float is sticking or otherwise showing a reading of the tank having fuel in it. They are easily dissassmbled, and you won't even lose any fuel whilst removing it.

Hi,

have checked the readings and am getting 320ohms. The fuel display just flashes constantly with the range. All other readings work and don't flash whilst the fuel level still flashes away...

If i take it out and have a look inside what am i looking for?

Hi Jon
As you are getting 320 ohms across the sensor, that is what I would expect from a working one with a full tank, I would not attempt to dissmantle it at this stage. Just one other check is to reset the computer, a long shot, but worth doing,....Disconnect battery, press and hold the button below the rev counter for, lets say 15secs, reconnect batt, and press same button just once, and see what happens. The display might stop flashing, if the fault still exists it should start flashing again after about 2 mins. In which case substution of the "tank sender unit", mounted on the wheel arch, is what I would do next. Try and borrow one from one of the breaker guys before you buy one just in case :wink:

Ok thanks, the only problem is that at the time of testing i only had about a 1/4 of a tank of fuel in the car, does that make a difference?
