Some scummage smashed my rear light!

Postby Juzzblack » Fri Oct 17, 2008 7:42 pm

I went to leave for work this morning to find some low-life scum bag thought it would be fun to use the back of my car as target practice by hurling sods of earth at it. They were obviously throwing it with intent to do damage because it would take some force to smash the light lens with a piece of turf!

Bastards!

So I need a drivers side rear light or preferably a matching pair. Anyone got any? Please see my post in the 'Wanted' section.

Cheers,

Juzz.

It made me f*****g angry too!

According to the neighbour he heard kids messing around about 20.30 - 20.40 but couldn't see where they were because they must have been round the side of the house where the drive is, out of view. So it wasn't even that late, they were probably quite young kids. Little buggers! I was at college at the time. Nearly went in the GTA but took the Volvo in the end. Wish I hadn't now!

No, I don't want to go through my insurers. Not worth the expense. They're unavailable from Renault now anyway aren't they? I think you can still get A610 ones but I don't want to fit them. They look fine on an A610 but I prefer the original smooth look on a GTA. Going to see if I can glue the pieces together as a make shift repair while I wait for some second hand ones to hopefully pop up.

Superglue is good for repairing perspex, but hold it in place for about 60secs or so, then leave for a couple of hours

It's mindless but probably not deliberate. The annoying thing is that the lights are no longer available.

It just sums up today's lack of respect for other peoples property and I feel for you.

My suggestion is that you try not to let it stress you out.

There are quite a few GTA's breaking right now which is sad enough in itself but at least you should be able to pick up a pair for a reasonable price and hopefully Ebay your odd one to someone who is less particular..

I suggest you don't go for the easy option of A610 lights, they suit the A610 but the GTA suits the smoother look.

Yes, had the same thought myself. Just to botch a repair until I can get a replacement. Took the light unit off today and managed to superglue the pieces back together but it's a bit of a messy repair. Difficult to try and ease the pieces back together without getting glue everywhere. Had to bend and tease the perspex to get them to fit together again. So, looks a bit of a mess under close scrutiny but will have to do for now:

Looks good Juzzblack :) It will certainly do until you get a replacement, but one has to dispair with the mentality of the morons that do this type of thing :x

Little gits, bring back the cane at school I say!

Juzz, you could try the Lotus Elan M100 as well as they use the same rear light clusters

Thought Lotus just bought them off Renault? So Lotus Elan owners will have the same problem getting replacements. And aren't the Esprit rear lights Toyota Celica units?
I'll have a gander on some Lotus forums though. Worth checking.

Juzzblack, here's are some photos of the Esprit Turbo from a buyers guide in Evo magazine. The rear lights to me look the same as a GTA.

The price they have in the magazine is £140.
I have looked on http://www.lotusbits.com and they are quoting £80.
Whether they are exactly the same, I'm not sure, but they do look like they could be. :D

Hi Andrew,

the rear lights on the Esprit are definitely Toyota items but taken from the '80s Toyota Corolla coupe, not the Celica as I first thought:

In 1988 a new version of the Esprit was introduced, incorporating rounder styling cues given by designer Peter Stevens of McLaren F1 fame. This time the tail-lights were sourced from the Toyota Corolla Coupé.

I think Lotus must have just fitted their own smoked lens over the top of them.

If you look carefully you will notice Esprit rear lights aren't angled with quite as steep a rake as GTA rear lights. Although they do look very similar.

Thanks for the suggestion anyway. I wish they were the same! :(
