What would you replace a GTA or A610 with?

Postby 2P5T » Fri Oct 03, 2008 4:13 pm

I've tried to think of some alternatives to a GTA or A610 Turbo. Mostly coupes of roughly the same vintage (late 80's - mid 90's) and in the £5K to £12K maximum price range.

Mazda RX-7 (engine wear? accomodation?)

Lotus Esprit (pricey, cramped?, a bit angular?)

older Porsche 911 (still pricey)

Porsche 944 Turbo (is it better than a GTA though?)

E36 BMW M3 (seems a good choice but the styling doesn't excite and they're everywhere)

VW Corrado VR6 (good car but slighty ordinary?)

Audi S2 (ditto)

Toyota Supra Twin Turbo (heavy, a bit macho / naff )

Nissan Skyline GT-R (hugely capable but ordinary looking)

Mitsubishi GTO (boulevard cruiser?)

Nissan 300ZX (a touch of the Supra/ GTO issues)

Lancia Delta Integrale (lust! ... but steering wheel 'over yonder', good ones pricey)

Subaru Impreza / Mitsubishi Evo (not keen on the looks / image)

I haven't owned or even driven that many interesting cars in my 25 year driving history but I can't think of much that I would replace a GTA with. I considered an M535i and 944 Turbo before buying a GTA but I bought a GTA because that's what appealed the most. Corrados and Integrales and the twin turbo Supra have been tempting to me but I think if I stopped procrastinating and took the plunge, I'd still want a GTA as well (which sort of defeats the point of change ).

What else have you enjoyed driving as much as or more than a GTA or A610?

Is there anything else sensibly priced that could tempt you away?

Do we overrate these cars while the world in general seems to underrate them? :?

IMO many of the fast japanese cars suffer from image, being beloved of the chavs. They also lack character, and for me, a car does need that X-factor - a sense of personality. I had a skyline for about 4 months and got bored with it almost immediately.

Once you've got used to the torque and reliability of a turbo PRV, a 4-banger esprit will be apalling.

The GTA & 610 covers the all-too-rare ground of being both a capable performer and a comfortable GT. When you eliminate the japanese stuff, there really is very little to choose from.

Personally, I've been toying with the idea of a late 90's Jag XJR - but it'll hardly hold a candle to a GTA in the corners!!!

Think it would have to be a RHD converted Lancia Delta Integrale, even though they reckon that some of the handling sharpness goes  Thats if i had a GTA :)

Money no object, it would be a Lambo Murcielago although I think they are a bit common next to the A610. I'v also got a bit of a soft spot for the Aston DB9 although they are positively rep-mobile next to the Alpine. For the same money, it really is a difficult choice. The Skyline R34 is a possibility although it's a bit 'chavvish'. MVS Venturi might be an answer although finding one might be a problem, there must have been fewer of them sold than even the A610?

I really hope I can manage to keep my A610 for many years. It's the only car I've hankered after for the past 15 years to the point of boring my friends and family and I don't regret buying it now I've driven and own it. I only hope I can do it justice and look after it for years to come as the inevitable problems that come with owning an ageing supercar aren't always easy to solve (you guys don't need to be told that though!!!). My friends and family incidentally now understand exactly why I've been so desperate to get one for all this time. I've not yet failed to convert someone from 'it's just a yellow car' to wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww.

Venturis are much more "raw" than a GTA/A610 - more a pure sportscar than GT.

If we're moving the price goalposts, then I'd say there's a reason why I got so into DeLoreans. IMO they're more comfortable than a GTA or a Venturi on a long run... but you do have to put in quite a bit of work to make them as good as they can be (eg with a GTA turbo engine ;) )

I think the New Nissan GTR is so extreme that it'd be my first purchase when my numbers come up!

how about modern day realistic obtainable cars (not super/hyper cars).

New laguna coupe and put a alpine badge on it.

New Laguna Coupe is a very nice car but does it deserve the Alpine badge? I think it will sell in bucket loads and is a bit too sensible to be badged Alpine. I think a new Renault Alpine should be in the mould of the new Nissan GT-R anyway. Something extremely fast that takes the establishment (911, R8 etc) on at there own game AND beats them for a fraction of the price. Please god, don't let Renault badge there 'new MX-5' an Alpine though, as was mentioned a year or so back!.

Slow I'll give you, but can I point out your Audi was penned by the very same Giorgetto Giugiaro, and you can see several common styling cues, esp if you look at the Scirocco as an in-between, which was also one of his.
